The Philadelphia Phillies have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for one of the more intriguing names who could move before the trade deadline: Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran.
Boston’s situation is murky enough that a deal like this at least makes some sense. The Red Sox have plenty of talent on the roster, but they still haven’t put it together for much of this season, and with the deadline approaching, they have to decide what direction they want to take. Duran is the kind of player who could draw real interest because he has shown at times that he can be elite, even if his production hasn’t always stayed at that level.
“The health of Roman Anthony complicates this a bit, but you could argue that a Duran trade makes sense for Boston regardless of whether they're buying or selling at the deadline. This team needs more right-handed pop, and he checks neither of those boxes,” Chris Landers wrote.
"Then again, the Red Sox have consistently refused to sell low on him, and he was downright awful at the plate in June. The outfield market figures to be sellers' market, but how motivated will another contender be?”
For Philadelphia, the appeal is obvious enough: Duran’s talent gives them a legitimate reason to be involved. He may not be the cleanest fit since he isn’t a right-handed bat, but among the players who could be available, he stands out as one of the better options on the board.
