Red Sox Eye Return of Jedixson Paez After Spring Training Struggles

Paez's turbulent spring training with the White Sox might pave the way for his unexpected return to the Red Sox lineup.

In December's Rule 5 Draft, the Boston Red Sox saw some changes to their roster, gaining new talent while also losing a promising prospect in right-handed pitcher Jedixson Paez. The Chicago White Sox made the surprising move to select Paez, a talented arm with potential for the majors, despite his limited experience above High-A and an injury-plagued season.

At 22, Paez faced an uphill battle, having not pitched beyond High-A. The White Sox seemed to be gambling on his ability to shine during spring training, hoping he could earn a spot on their Opening Day roster. However, his spring performance has been rocky.

In 6.1 innings pitched, Paez has shown flashes of brilliance with eight strikeouts and just two walks. But the positives stop there, as he's given up six runs on eight hits, including a home run.

It’s crucial to remember that this is a small sample size, and spring training stats don’t always tell the whole story. The White Sox might still see potential in his mechanics or improvements in camp.

Despite these struggles, it’s hard to envision the White Sox justifying a roster spot for Paez come Opening Day. If they decide against it, Paez would likely be offered back to the Red Sox, who would eagerly welcome him back into their robust minor league system. His exceptional control is a standout trait, and it’s easy to see why the White Sox initially took a chance on him.

While anything can happen-Paez could turn things around or the White Sox might face unexpected roster challenges-Red Sox fans can be optimistic about his potential return. Adding Paez back into the mix would only strengthen Boston’s already impressive pitching prospects.
