The Red Sox made it through the 2026 Major League Baseball trade deadline without moving Jarren Duran, but that does not make his future in Boston any clearer.
Duran was one of the names that kept surfacing as the deadline approached, and the chatter never really died down. The Padres were linked to him again, just as they had been in previous trade cycles.
Last year, the rumors were loud and centered around San Diego. Over the offseason, they picked up again as Boston appeared headed toward an outfield crunch with Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Duran and Masataka Yoshida all healthy.
That was the setup entering the season, though Anthony’s injury changed the picture.
Even with Boston on a hot streak, the speculation only grew in the final week before the deadline. In early June, it was reported that the Red Sox had a "steep" asking price for Duran despite his rough offensive season. Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune also connected the Padres to him again as the deadline neared.
Still, Boston held onto him. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported that the Red Sox told Duran late Monday that he would remain with the club.
"Red Sox kept Jarren Duran and conveyed to him late during today’s trade window that they were keeping him. The playing time shuffle with Eli White, Jahmai Jones and others is of interest moving forward," Cotillo wrote.
The story, though, is hardly over. Boston added another outfielder on Monday in Eli White, who had been with the Atlanta Braves, and Anthony’s eventual return will bring the outfield congestion back into focus.
The expectation around Duran may simply be shifting from summer to winter. Earlier in the week, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that Boston is "expected" to trade him after the season.
"The Boston Red Sox, who had resisted trade overtures for outfielder Jarren Duran in the past, now are expected to trade him this winter," Nightengale wrote.
For now, Duran stays put. The Red Sox clearly still believe in the talent, even with 2026 being a difficult year at the plate. But the noise around him is not going away, and this winter could bring a very different outcome.
