Cardinals Stun Fans by Signing Infielder Linked to Red Sox

Cardinals bolster their infield with versatile veteran Ramon Urias, edging out the Red Sox for the former Gold Glove winner's signature.

The St. Louis Cardinals have made a savvy move in the free-agent market, signing infielder Ramón Urías to a one-year, $2 million contract. This deal includes a $1.5 million salary for 2026 and a $500,000 buyout on a 2027 mutual option, with an additional $2 million in incentives based on plate appearances.

Urías, a versatile 31-year-old from Mexico, is known for his stellar defense and right-handed batting. Standing at 5-foot-9, he brings a Gold Glove pedigree to the Cardinals, a team in the midst of a rebuild.

His ability to play any infield position will be invaluable as the Cardinals look to develop their young talent throughout the season. When those emerging players need a break, Urías will be ready to step in seamlessly.

Last season, Urías split his time between the Baltimore Orioles and the Houston Astros, achieving a solid 2.2 Wins Above Replacement. He posted a .241 batting average, with 17 doubles and 11 home runs across 112 games, while continuing to impress with his defensive skills.

Having spent his first six MLB seasons with the Orioles before his move to the Astros in 2025, Urías now joins his third team, the Cardinals. He’s poised to make a significant impact and leave his mark in St. Louis.
