Caleb Durbin has gone from an early-season headache to one of the clearest signs that the Red Sox are rolling.
Boston brought him in this offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers to handle third base, and the fit looked shaky almost immediately. Durbin opened the year 0-for-18, a brutal start that did not help a Red Sox team already stumbling out of the gate. For a while, it was fair to wonder whether Boston had given up too much in the deal for the 5-foot-6 infielder.
That doubt looks a lot smaller now.
On Monday night, Durbin delivered the swing that mattered most, launching a clutch solo home run that stood up as the game-winner in Boston’s 14th straight victory.

The recent production has been loud. Over his last 30 games, Durbin is batting .308 with seven home runs in 107 at bats, along with six stolen bases. His slugging percentage in that stretch is .551.
That’s not the profile most people would expect from a player his size, and it’s exactly why he’s become so easy to miss and so hard to ignore. He’s now homering once every 14 at bats in that span, which is the kind of run that changes the way a lineup looks.
For Boston, the bigger picture is starting to take shape. This season is beginning to feel less like a story about the rough opening month and more like one about where the Red Sox are headed now. If Durbin keeps swinging it like this, no one in Boston is going to spend much time thinking about that 0-for-18 start.
