The Braves are going to have plenty on their offseason plate, but left field stands out as one of the clearest places where they need to get serious fast. Atlanta still has rotation depth to sort through, and shortstop remains a problem area too. Even so, the biggest lineup issue right now is out in left, where the Braves need a real bat rather than another patch job.
That is why Randy Arozarena belongs near the top of their list.
Arozarena checks a lot of boxes Atlanta should care about. He hits from the right side, he brings offense, and he has already shown he can produce even while playing home games at T-Mobile Park, one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in MLB.
Through 639 plate appearances, he has put up an .861 OPS with 26 homers. He has also been especially strong against lefties, while still doing enough against right-handers to stay in the lineup on a regular basis.
The defense is not his selling point, but that is not enough to knock him out of the conversation. Truist Park is easier to cover in the outfield than T-Mobile Park, so the glove issue does not feel like a total dealbreaker for Atlanta.
The bigger challenge is getting him. This free-agent class looks thin, especially when it comes to impact bats, and Arozarena figures to be one of the few names that can really move the needle.
Ryan Divish said on Foul Territory that, āI think we all know Randy [Arozarena] would prefer to stay on the east coast. Iām guessing Boston is ready to cut a huge check for him.ā
That kind of market only makes things tougher.
If Arozarena does want to get back east, that should at least give the Braves a chance. The Red Sox are expected to be heavily involved, and teams like the Yankees and Orioles could also get into the mix, especially because Arozarena has a strong track record in the AL East.
That is what sets this up for Atlanta: the fit is obvious, but the price could get uncomfortable in a hurry. The Braves can point to a strong roster, multiple stars, and real World Series aspirations.
The question is whether Alex Anthopoulos is willing to spend big enough to land one of the few impact bats available. He has not often gone out and won those kinds of bidding wars, but this offseason may demand it.
Arozarena is the sort of player who could finally solve a long-running problem in left field.
