Boston Red Sox fans are getting a sneak peek at a lineup that closely resembles what they'll see on Opening Day at Great American Ballpark. Manager Alex Cora has hinted that his February 22 Grapefruit League lineup will be a strong indicator of the team he'll field against the Cincinnati Reds on March 26.
While some positions might still be up for grabs, one spot is locked in: Roman Anthony as the leadoff hitter. Cora made it official just before unveiling the near-Opening Day lineup. Anthony's spot at the top seemed inevitable unless Jarren Duran made a significant comeback or another player unexpectedly broke out.
Despite Anthony's youth and the weight of being a former top prospect, he's earned his place at the top of the order. Last season, during Boston's playoff push, he thrived in the leadoff role, posting a .320/.370/.560 slash line with a .930 OPS over 27 plate appearances as the team's first batter.
In his initial 71 MLB games, Anthony showcased why he might soon be the best hitter in the Red Sox lineup. With a .292/.396/.463 slash line, an .859 OPS, and a 140 OPS+, he accumulated 3.1 bWAR and finished third in the American League Rookie of the Year race, all in less than a third of the season.
Anthony's impact in the leadoff spot isn't just about his bat. At 21, he carries himself with the poise of a seasoned veteran, both in the batter's box and when speaking to the media.
Reflecting on his role, Anthony told NESN, "I felt really comfortable in the leadoff spot last year, but ultimately, I just want to help the team win. If that's what A.C. thinks gives us the best chance, then I'm all in.
It's something I take pride in-getting the boys going, trying to get on base. If you can do some damage in that first inning, it can be huge in a baseball game."
Though young and relatively inexperienced, Anthony is embraced by the Red Sox and MLB as a budding star for good reason. He's shown he can excel as a leadoff hitter, and Cora's trust in him is well-placed to ignite the team's offense.
