Alex Cora Sparks Questions With Narvaez Benching

Cora's unexpected lineup changes spark speculation as the Red Sox aim to dodge an Astros sweep, leaving fans guessing about Narvez's benching.

In a bid to shake things up before the Boston Red Sox's series finale against the Houston Astros, manager Alex Cora made some notable roster adjustments. Roman Anthony, who had a rough outing with four strikeouts the previous night, will be taking a seat alongside Marcelo Mayer. Meanwhile, Carlos Narváez was unexpectedly replaced by Connor Wong in the lineup.

Cora was tight-lipped about the specifics behind Narváez's late scratch, ensuring fans that it wasn’t due to injury. This has sparked some speculation among the Red Sox faithful about the possibility of a disciplinary move.

“I just made a change... I talked to Carlos a little bit.

We move on from there. So one of those that I felt like we needed to make the change in the lineup, and it’s for the best,” Cora explained.

He emphasized that such decisions are part and parcel of managing a team, especially early in the season.

While some might wonder if Narváez did something to warrant this benching, it's important to note that the Red Sox haven't had any public disciplinary issues with him. Having spent just one season with Boston after his time in the Yankees' minor league system, Narváez hasn't shown any signs of being a problematic presence.

Another angle to consider is Cora's potential strategy to capitalize on a hot bat. Connor Wong has started the season strong, boasting a 1.143 OPS with three hits, including two doubles and an RBI, in just three games. This is a marked improvement from his performance last year, where he hit .190 with limited extra-base hits.

Narváez, on the other hand, has also been solid at the plate, with four singles in his first three games. Despite Wong's offensive surge, Narváez's defensive prowess is a significant asset, and his absence is felt, especially with Wong already recording an error that led to an unearned run.

As the Red Sox look forward to their home opener against the San Diego Padres after a day off, resolving any underlying issues with Narváez will be crucial. Whether it's a strategic move or something else, Boston will hope to have all hands on deck as they continue their campaign.
