Alex Cora Hints at Bold Red Sox Decision Involving Marcelo Mayer

Red Sox manager Alex Cora signals high expectations for Marcelo Mayer as the competition heats up for the teams remaining starting spots.

The Boston Red Sox's lineup for Opening Day has been largely predictable since spring training kicked off, with only second and third base generating some buzz. As the countdown to their season opener against the Cincinnati Reds continues, manager Alex Cora is close to naming Caleb Durbin as the starting third baseman. However, the second base position remains up for grabs, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Marcelo Mayer, and Andruw Monasterio all in contention.

Red Sox fans are particularly excited about the possibility of seeing Marcelo Mayer take the field. The former top prospect has long been touted for his potential, but Cora has emphasized that Mayer needs to prove himself with his bat. Recent comments from Cora indicate that Mayer is making significant strides.

“He's playing well," Cora noted, highlighting Mayer's progress. "He's playing really well.

And obviously, we have to make a decision. We haven't made that decision, but so far, he's been checking all the boxes.”

Mayer's spring training started off slow at the plate, but he's found his rhythm as the Grapefruit League games progress. In a recent game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Mayer showcased his talent with two hits, two walks, an RBI, and a run.

Last season, a wrist injury limited Mayer to just 44 major league games, during which he struggled with a 30.1% strikeout rate. This spring, however, he's shown improvement, balancing six strikeouts with six walks, indicating a sharper eye at the plate.

While some might have assumed Mayer was a shoo-in for the Opening Day roster, Cora's approach seems to be about ensuring Mayer earns his spot. Regardless of his status as a former No. 1 prospect, Mayer's work ethic appears to be winning over the coaching staff.

If Mayer doesn't secure the spot, both Kiner-Falefa and Monasterio have made strong cases with impressive spring performances. Kiner-Falefa boasts a .406/.486/.469 slash line over 13 games, while Monasterio has hit .300/.405/.467 in the same span. Additionally, Romy Gonzalez is expected to return from the injured list in early May, adding another option to the mix.

For now, it looks like Cora is leaning toward Mayer, giving Red Sox fans hope of witnessing Mayer's full potential in the majors this season.
