Ryan Marohn Stuns BC With Masterful Shutout Performance

NC State's efficient pitching and capitalizing on BC's errors sealed their 4-2 victory in the season opener.

Ryan Marohn was the hero of the day, delivering a stellar performance on the mound for NC State as they secured a 4-2 victory in the series opener. Marohn, a standout for Junior Team USA, was in control throughout his seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs.

He kept BC at bay with timely double plays in the second and third innings and back-to-back strikeouts to quash a threat in the fourth. His final line read: 7 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts.

BC's Colarusso started strong, holding the Wolfpack scoreless through three innings. However, NC State found their rhythm in the fourth.

After a one-out walk, Luke Nixon's bunt was mishandled by Colarusso, putting runners on first and second. A single loaded the bases for Brayden Fraasman, whose long foul fly was caught, but it was deep enough for Mikey Ryan to tag up and score, giving NC State a 1-0 lead.

The Wolfpack added another run in the fifth. Rett Johnson led off with an infield single, and with two outs, Dalton Bargo's line drive to right field brought him home, making it 2-0. In the sixth, Luke Nixon's wind-aided solo homer extended the lead, and Rett Johnson's speed allowed him to beat out a play at first, securing NC State's fourth run.

Anderson Nance took the mound in the eighth, and BC finally broke through. Back-to-back doubles from Solier and Mainolfi cut the deficit to 4-1.

But a pickoff and a foul pop-out ended the threat. In the ninth, BC had one last chance.

Nance walked two of the first three batters, and his replacement, Collins Black, walked pinch-hitter Esteban Garcia to load the bases with one out. Jace Roossien hit a shallow fly ball, and all three runners tagged up.

Toomey scored from third, but Chris McHugh, NC State's first baseman, cut off the throw and nabbed Luke Gallo trying to advance to third, ending the game with a final score of 4-2 in favor of NC State.

BC showed some fight late in the game, but base-running mistakes proved costly. A pickoff in the eighth and a double play on a fly out in the ninth were crucial missteps. The aggressive base running on Roossien's fly ball was a gamble that didn't pay off, but it could have put BC in a position to tie the game with a single, despite their struggles at the plate.

Colarusso pitched well but was undone by a few key moments. A fielding error on a bunt, a footrace loss to Rett Johnson, and a wind-aided home run were pivotal. His final line doesn't reflect how close the game truly was, hinging on just a few plays.

Ultimately, NC State capitalized on their opportunities, going 3-12 with runners on base and 3-7 with runners in scoring position, compared to BC's 2-15 and 1-7, respectively. BC needs a strong start from Mudd in the next game and to get their base running back on track.

Despite the loss, facing a top 10 team and keeping it close is a positive takeaway. They just need to execute a bit more to even the series.
