Boston College’s preseason countdown is rolling toward kickoff, and Kris Jones lands near the top for a reason. The EDGE rusher checks in at No. 3 on the Eagles’ list of most valuable players heading into a 2026 season that opens Saturday and marks year three under Bill O’Brien.
Jones arrives with plenty of buzz after a strong spring and summer, and the expectation around him is obvious: Boston College brought him in to hunt quarterbacks. That role matters even more with Ted Roof stepping in to install an aggressive defense. If Jones’ camp performance is any indication, he’s set up to be one of the most impactful defenders on the roster.
The profile starts with the recruiting pedigree. Jones is from Stafford, Va., and attended Fairfax High School.
He was a four-star recruit in the 2024 class, ranked No. 127 nationally, No. 10 among linebackers, and No. 3 in Virginia. As a transfer, he came in as a three-star portal addition and was ranked the No.
42 EDGE.
Jones has made it clear that he isn’t easing into that opportunity. When asked about his pass rush work and his own standards, he said:
"I have high expectations for myself. I just carry a high standard for myself.
Working with Coach (Jashon) Cornell (Defensive analyst) every day with the pass rush. I mean, that's really important to me.
Trying to perfect that, trying to get footwork right, hands right, eyes, stuff like that. So that's that's really important to me."
On the field, Jones’ college résumé is still relatively small. He appeared in 14 career games at Georgia, including the Sugar Bowl, and finished with seven tackles.
But the outlook in Chestnut Hill is much bigger than that stat line. Boston College sees him as a player with real ceiling, and the comparison point the staff is trying to avoid but can’t help hinting at is Donovan Ezeiruaku. They’re not the same player, but there are similarities in size and in what each can bring off the edge.
Jones also won’t be carrying the load alone. Onye Nwosisi had a big summer of his own, and Demetrius Ballard, Israel Oladipupo and E'lla Boykin all drew praise as well.
Still, Jones is the one the Eagles are counting on to tilt the defense. If his spring and summer carry over, he could end up being far more disruptive than what Boston College had on the field in 2025.
The rest of the top five on the list includes edge rusher Onye Nwosisi at No. 6, linebacker Anthony Palano at No. 5, and defensive back Syair Torrence at No. 4.
