Boston College’s defensive front got a notable boost this offseason, and KJ Sampson looks like one of the additions with the best chance to matter right away.
The former Florida State defensive tackle lands at No. 17 in Boston College Eagles On SI’s ranking of the Eagles’ top 20 players for the 2026 season, and the appeal is easy to see. Sampson arrived through the portal with real high-major pedigree, the kind that first-year general manager Kenyatta Watson and the staff clearly valued when they brought in 27 transfers this year.
A consensus four-star recruit out of New Bern High School, Sampson was rated the fifth-best prospect in North Carolina and came into the cycle as the No. 86 overall transfer prospect by 247Sports. That kind of profile makes him one of the more intriguing pieces on BC’s defensive line.
His time at Florida State never turned into a full-time starting role, but he still flashed enough to show why he drew attention in the portal. Last season, Sampson played in 10 games without a start and finished with 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. For a defensive tackle who wasn’t on the field every week in a major role, that’s solid production.
At 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, Sampson may not be the most eye-catching body among BC’s new defensive linemen, but he made a strong impression this spring with his blend of upper-body power and mobility. That movement stands out at his position, and it gives him a chance to carve out a meaningful role quickly.
Ted Roof still has decisions to make along the defensive tackle and end spots, but Sampson should be part of that conversation from the start. That matters even more with younger players and mid-major transfers adjusting to ACC speed early in the season.
Boston College’s defensive line needs more production after a quiet 2025, and Sampson is one of the players the staff is counting on to help change that.
Sampson’s high school résumé backs up the hype, too. At New Bern, he was a four-year All-State and All-Conference selection and piled up 255 tackles, 47.0 tackles for loss, 31.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception. He also earned North Carolina’s defensive prep player of the year honor as a senior.
