CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College Baseball pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory over Cal in the finale of their weekend series, showcasing resilience and clutch performances that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Starting pitcher for the Eagles delivered a strong six innings, striking out seven-a personal best-while keeping the Golden Bears at bay with only two unearned runs. His solid outing set the tone, and the bullpen picked up right where he left off. Chase Hartsell came in and dazzled for two hitless innings, striking out one, while John Kwiatkowski took the reins for the final three frames, allowing just three hits and no runs to earn his third win of the season.
Cal drew first blood with a sacrifice fly to deep center, bringing in a runner from third for an early lead. But Boston College responded quickly.
Danny Surowiec sparked the offense in the bottom of the second with a leadoff single. A well-placed sacrifice bunt by Luke Gallo advanced him, and Cesar Gonzalez’s timely single brought Surowiec home to tie the game.
The Eagles nudged ahead in the fourth. Gallo singled, advanced to third with smart base running, and crossed the plate thanks to Colin Larson’s clutch single to center. The back-and-forth battle continued as Cal tied it up in the sixth with a two-out single.
Drama unfolded in the eighth when the Golden Bears threatened with a runner on third. A flyout to left field saw Nick Wang make a pivotal throw to home, nailing the runner and keeping the game tied.
Boston College had a golden opportunity in the ninth with runners on second and third, but Ty Mainolfi’s flyout and Larson’s attempt to steal home fell short, sending the game into extra innings.
Kwiatkowski showcased nerves of steel, navigating through tight spots in the 10th and 11th innings, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. In the bottom of the 11th, a leadoff walk and a Cal miscue on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners with no outs. Kyle Wolff then lofted a ball to left field, which slipped through the Cal outfielder’s grasp, allowing Owen DeShazo to dash home and seal the walk-off win for Boston College.
