Boston College Wraps Palmas Run With Late Surge From Rising Duo

Boston College wraps up a challenging weekend in Puerto Rico with promising performances from its younger golfers ahead of next months Surf Club Invitational.

BC Men's Golf Wraps Up Palmas del Mar Collegiate with 10th-Place Finish

The Boston College men’s golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season with a 10th-place finish at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Over three rounds on the par-72, 7,117-yard Flamboyan Course, the Eagles posted scores of 291-291-289 to finish 7-over par (871) as a team.

There were bright spots for BC, particularly from sophomore Tommy Mangan and freshman Tony Yin, who both finished tied for 23rd at 1-under par. Mangan saved his best for last, carding a 69 in the final round that included six birdies-more than any other Eagle in the tournament. It was a strong finish that showed both poise and potential, especially in a field stacked with top-tier programs.

Yin, making just his collegiate spring debut, showed consistency across all three rounds with scores of 69-73-73. His opening-round 69 gave the Eagles early momentum and hinted at the kind of upside BC has in its young talent.

Senior Jack Pogorelc was next on the leaderboard for the Eagles, finishing tied for 33rd. His second-round 69 stood out as a highlight, but bookending rounds of 74 kept him from climbing higher on the leaderboard. Still, the veteran presence he brings to this lineup remains invaluable.

Junior Markus Lam posted rounds of 76-77-73 to finish tied for 70th. He bounced back with a solid final round, shaving four strokes off his previous score to close out the tournament on a positive note.

Freshman Connor Chisum rounded out the Eagles' five-man squad. He finished in 83rd place after posting rounds of 80-75-79. While the scores weren’t where he’d like them to be, the experience gained in a competitive field like this one is the kind that pays off down the line.

The Eagles were up against a loaded leaderboard. Wake Forest ran away with the team title, finishing at 26-under par (838), followed by TCU (-20), Southern Illinois (-15), UNCG (-11), and Rutgers (-7). Individually, Wake Forest’s Tom Haberer led the way at 13-under, edging out teammate Nicholas Prieto (-11) for medalist honors.

For Boston College, the focus now shifts to building on this performance as they head to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Surf Club Invitational on March 9-10. Hosted by Appalachian State, the two-day event will offer another opportunity for this mix of veteran leadership and young talent to keep progressing.

There’s plenty to build on from Puerto Rico-especially the final-round surge and the individual flashes from Mangan and Yin. If BC can string together more of those moments across the lineup, they’ll be a team to watch as the spring season unfolds.
