Boston College wasted no time making a statement in its ACC opener Friday afternoon, turning a tight four-set battle with Notre Dame into a 25-23, 20-25, 18-25, 17-25 win at the Connell Recreation Center.
The Eagles, now 10-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, picked up their first ACC victory of the season and beat Notre Dame for the first time since 2024. Boston College is now 6-24 all-time against the Fighting Irish.
Audrey Ross powered the offense with a career-best 25 kills, while Sam Hoppes finished with 10 kills and a .273 hitting percentage. Ava McBride put together a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs, and Lucie Vesela added 14 assists.
Brooklyn Yelland anchored the back row with a match-high 19 digs, and Reese Dunkle and Isabelle Poehlein each had four blocks. McBride and Yelland also logged their first kills of the season.
Notre Dame grabbed the first punch with a 3-0 start, but Boston College answered fast. Hoppes delivered two straight kills, Yelland added one, and Ross teamed with Naomi Watson on a block as the Eagles surged ahead 8-6.
The opener stayed tight from there, with nine ties before the Irish edged in front 21-18. Ross kept BC alive late, cutting the gap to 24-23, but Notre Dame finished it off 25-23.
The second set had the same kind of tug-of-war feel, with nine ties and six lead changes. Boston College trailed 12-11 before Ross, Watson and Yelland helped fuel a three-point burst that flipped the score to 14-12.
After Notre Dame pulled even at 18-18, the Eagles took control with a 7-2 closing run. Yelland served an ace in that stretch, the Irish gave away points with attacking errors, and Ross put BC on set point before Notre Dame’s final error made it 25-20.
Boston College carried that momentum into the third. After dropping the first two points, the Eagles rallied to move ahead 8-7 and then ripped off a 7-0 run.
Sofija Marjanovic sparked the surge from the service line with an ace, while Dunkle and Ross added kills to push the lead to 15-7. Hoppes and Poehlein helped keep the margin comfortable, and Dunkle joined Poehlein for a block assist.
McBride set up Ross for the set-ending kill, giving BC a 25-18 win and a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was another grind early, with 12 ties and four lead changes through the middle points. Notre Dame built a 7-4 advantage before the Eagles answered with a Dunkle kill, a Dunkle-Poehlein block, and another Marjanovic ace to level things at 10-10.
Boston College later fought back from 16-14 down to tie it at 17-17, and then Marjanovic took over at the line again. Her serving jump-started an 8-0 closing run, with consecutive kills from Ross, McBride and Dunkle helping Boston College slam the door at 25-17.
