Boston College softball is adding a new voice to its dugout, with head coach Beth Krysiak bringing Jared McDonald onto the staff as an assistant coach.
Krysiak said McDonald arrives with a rare mix of experience that spans playing, private instruction and college coaching. “We are excited to be welcoming Jared McDonald to the Heights!
He understands hitting from every angle, as a professional player, a private instructor and as a Division I coach. His ability to connect with the athletes, detailed preparation and teaching ability are going to make an impact with our team immediately.”
McDonald comes to Chestnut Hill after one season at Utah State, where he helped an offense that produced 82 doubles, 48 home runs and four grand slams. He also played a role in the development of Mountain West All-Conference selection Kya Pratt, who posted top-10 single-season marks in doubles, total bases and hits, along with Grace Matej, who finished among the program’s single-season leaders in home runs, RBI and total bases.
Before his stop at Utah State, McDonald spent four years as the coordinator of baseball/softball operations at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute. In that role, he handled staffing, player evaluation, development and programming. He also worked as an account executive with Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment in Chicago from 2022-23, where he dealt with corporate sponsorships and sales.
His background as a player is just as extensive. McDonald started his college career at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona, and in 2008 earned first-team All-American, all-region and all-conference honors.
That season, he batted .467 with 16 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 41 RBI in 53 games, and took home the Rawlings Big Stick Award. The Chicago Cubs drafted him in the 40th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft before he moved on to Arizona State.
At Arizona State, McDonald was part of a Sun Devils team that went 51-14 and finished third at the 2009 College World Series. He started at shortstop, played in 58 games and was then selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round of the 2009 MLB Draft.
McDonald spent 2009-11 in the White Sox minor league system at the Single-A level, then went on to play eight seasons in independent leagues across seven different teams. In 2016, he set the all-time minor league record for consecutive games reaching base, reaching safely in 75 straight games with the Rockland Boulders.
