Boston College volleyball wasted no time making a statement to open the Boston College Invitational, handling Stonehill in straight sets Thursday night at the Margot Connell Center.
The Eagles, now 3-0 overall and 0-0 in ACC play, beat the Skyhawks 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-21. It was Boston College’s fourth straight win over Stonehill, with the Eagles sweeping the Skyhawks in every meeting so far.
Audrey Ross powered the attack with 14 kills, the most by any player in the match, while also adding six digs and two total blocks. Sam Hoppes was nearly flawless, finishing with seven kills on 10 swings for a .700 hitting percentage. Reese Dunkle chipped in a career-high seven kills, and Lucie Vesela made her Boston College debut while leading the team with 14 assists.
BC had to work for the first set. After the opening stretch stayed tight through the first ten rallies, the Eagles put together a 9-3 run to create some separation.
Ross and Hoppes each helped fuel the push, and the front line forced several Stonehill errors to build a 14-7 cushion. The Skyhawks made a charge of their own, cutting the margin to 21-19 with an 8-2 run and prompting a timeout from Boston College.
The Eagles answered cleanly, with Ross delivering two kills before Stonehill committed an attacking error to close out the set 25-21.
The second set followed a similar script, with Boston College grabbing an early four-point edge before Stonehill pulled even at 8-8. Hoppes, Dunkle and Laney Blevins helped the Eagles regain control, and BC went into the media timeout ahead 15-12. From there, the home side separated for good, finishing the set on a 10-5 stretch and getting seven kills from six different players to take it 25-17.
Boston College kept its grip on the match in the third. Ross, Hoppes and Sofija Marjanovic combined for four kills as the Eagles opened a 10-5 lead, then carried a seven-point advantage into the media timeout.
Stonehill never got close enough to threaten the lead, and BC finished off the sweep 25-21. Isabelle Poehlein also saw her first action since last season’s injury in the frame.
Boston College returns to the floor Friday, September 4, hosting Bucknell at 7 p.m. in the Margot Connell Center. The match will stream on ACCNX.
