Boston College Heads To SMU With A Defensive Concern Growing

Boston College faces significant roster challenges ahead of their critical matchup against No. 21 SMU, as key players remain sidelined with injuries.

Boston College’s injury picture didn’t change much Wednesday night, and that means the Eagles are still carrying plenty of absences into Saturday’s matchup with No. 21 SMU.

Linebacker Bodie Kahoun is out again after missing the last two games with an injury he suffered against Rutgers. Kahoun had six tackles before leaving that game, and Boston College has felt his absence in the linebacker rotation. In his place, the Eagles have leaned on Zacari Thomas and Kemori Dixon.

The availability report also lists defensive back Cameron Martinez, defensive tackle Chris Marable Jr., defensive back Isaiah Farris, linebacker Justin Medlock, running back Sedric Addison, offensive linemen Pape Abdoulaye Sy and Michael Crounse, and tight end Kaelan Chudzinski as unavailable.

Marable has already missed the last three games, while Crounse’s injury dates back to the season opener against Cincinnati. With Marable sidelined, Cameron McGee has moved into the starting lineup, and DJ Williams has started at center for Boston College.

There are two names still worth monitoring as the week moves forward. Torrence is questionable after returning against Maine and making an immediate splash on special teams by forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff.

He then sat out last weekend’s game against Virginia Tech because of an injury. Torrence is working back from a knee injury that kept him out for most of the 2025 season.

Clough is also questionable after missing the last two games. The redshirt sophomore started the opener against Cincinnati at tight end and caught four passes for 31 yards. If he’s able to return, Boston College would get one of its more trusted options back at a spot that has produced only 10 catches for 100 yards through the first four games.

Boston College comes in at 2-2 after a 21-14 loss to Virginia Tech. The Eagles will take on SMU on Saturday at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, with kickoff set for noon ET on The CW.

Boston College Has A Mason McKenzie Problem It Must Solve Fast

Four weeks into the season, Boston Colleges offense is still searching for answers, and Mason McKenzie has become one of the clearest signs of how much the Eagles are leaning on their quarterback to keep things moving. McKenzie ranks 12th nationally in rushing attempts and is second among quarterbacks with 74 carries, a workload that reflects both his ability to create with his legs and the pressure on BC to manufacture offense any way it can. Bill OBrien has already acknowledged the need for the unit to get better, and the numbers back up the concern: the Eagles have struggled to score, complete passes and pile up yards in ACC play.

The timing is tough, too, because Southern Methodist brings a very different kind of challenge. Kevin Jennings and the Mustangs have a passing game that can stress a defense quickly, which means Boston College may need its own offense to do more than simply survive drives and hope McKenzie can extend plays. For the Eagles, the immediate question is whether they can find a more balanced answer before the season slips further away. [Read more 🡒]

Boston College Fans Get A Flutie Nostalgia Hit Before A Huge SMU Test

As Boston College heads into a major early test against SMU, there is at least a little nostalgia in the air for Eagles fans who remember when Doug Flutie was the standard for football celebrity in Chestnut Hill. Flutie Flakes are making a return to Tops Markets starting Oct. 4, a small but fitting reminder of one of the programs most recognizable alumni, with proceeds going to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.

The timing lands in the middle of a wider college sports conversation, too, after the U.S. Senate passed the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act, which would create a federal framework for NIL compensation and put guardrails around conference size. For BC, the bigger immediate focus is still SMU and what the Mustangs have shown through four games on both sides of the ball, which is why the old Flutie buzz feels like a nice backdrop rather than the main event. Boston College Volleyball Faces Its Toughest ACC Reality Check Yet

Boston Colleges first week of ACC volleyball gave the Eagles a little of everything, and now the schedule turns far less forgiving. After opening conference play with a win over Notre Dame and then running into a much harsher night against Louisville, the Eagles are back at home for another difficult stretch that will test how much of that early momentum can carry into the leagues upper tier.

The next few days bring a different kind of measuring stick, with two of the conferences highest-ranked teams coming to Chestnut Hill. Boston College has already shown it can compete in spots, and the individual numbers from recent matches suggest there is enough talent to make things interesting, but the larger question now is whether that can hold up when the opponent quality keeps climbing and the pressure comes fast.
