Boston College Has An Early Problem It Needs To Fix Fast

The Boston College Eagles were unable to overcome an early deficit as Vermont secured a decisive win in their latest Hockey East matchup.

Boston College’s comeback push never fully caught fire Thursday night, and Vermont made sure of it with a 5-2 Hockey East win at Kelley Rink.

Dean Letourneau and Teddy Stiga each found the net for the Eagles, while Alex Pelletier and Carson Woodall picked up assists. But Vermont’s early burst put BC in a hole it couldn’t climb out of, and the Catamounts left Chestnut Hill with the result after adding an empty-netter in the final minute.

The loss drops Boston College to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Hockey East. Vermont moves to 5-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in league play.

Vermont wasted no time getting on the board. Tyler Dysart scored just 1:17 into the game, and the Catamounts kept pressing from there. Midway through the first period, Logan Renkowski scored on the power play, and Ethan Burroughs followed 1:19 later to make it 3-0.

BC finally answered late in the opening period when Letourneau scored his sixth goal of the year. The play started with Pelletier forcing a turnover in the neutral zone, then finding Letourneau as he moved in on goal. Letourneau finished the chance with a shot into the top left corner to trim the deficit.

Vermont pushed the margin back to three early in the second when Michael Hagens scored on the power play. Still, the Eagles kept hanging around and cut into the lead again late in the period. Stiga spun away from a Vermont defender in the neutral zone, carried the puck to the crease, and finished from close range to make it a two-goal game.

Boston College pulled Louka Cloutier for an extra attacker in an effort to close the gap, but Vermont sealed it with an empty-net goal from Tyler Dysart with 52 seconds left.

The teams meet again Friday night to finish the weekend set. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., with coverage on NESN regionally, ESPN+ nationally, and TSN in Canada. The game will also be heard on WEEI 850 AM.

Boston College Already Faces An Early Gut Check After 0-2 Start

Boston Colleges womens basketball team is already looking at an early reset after an 0-2 start, and the latest setback came in a lopsided loss to Harvard. The Eagles were outpaced from the perimeter and struggled to keep the Crimson from turning mistakes into points, leaving Boston College searching for answers before the schedule gets any tougher.

Eunicia Salgado was a bright spot with 14 points, six rebounds and two steals, giving Boston College a steady presence even as the game slipped away. The bigger concern is how quickly the margin widened once Harvard found its rhythm, a reminder that the Eagles will need cleaner possessions and more consistent scoring if they want to avoid letting this early hole deepen. Boston College Faces A Far Trickier Florida State Test Than Usual

Florida State arrives at Alumni Stadium with a different look and a familiar challenge for Boston College, even if the Seminoles are favored by 6.5 points. The coaching shuffle has put interim voices in charge on both sides of the ball, with Rick Stockstill now handling the offense and Ernie Sims Jr. directing the defense, which adds an extra layer of uncertainty to a matchup already shaped by inconsistency.

For Boston College, the bigger question is whether it can turn that uncertainty into an edge against a team still trying to settle into new roles. Both defenses have had their issues, and the game could come down to which dual-threat quarterback can create more problems, with Ashton Daniels giving Florida State a mobile option and Mason McKenzie offering the Eagles a similar kind of pressure point. Boston College Just Passed An Early Test Fans Will Notice

A physical night at TD Garden gave Boston College an early-season result it can point to, and maybe more importantly, a type of win that tends to travel. The Eagles handled UMass 71-55 to move to 2-0, leaning on a spirited defensive effort and strong work inside from Brandon Benjamin while the building had the feel of a rivalry game, complete with an animated Frank Martin on the Minutemen sideline.

Boston College did not need to be sharp from deep to control the game, which is its own encouraging sign this early in the season. The Eagles kept creating problems for UMass with pressure and activity, turning defense into offense and finding enough scoring punch to separate, with Money Williams giving them a huge lift at the offensive end as the kind of early test fans will remember when the schedule gets tougher.
