Florida State is asking Ashton Daniels to steady the ship at exactly the moment the Seminoles need calm the most.
With Mike Norvell gone and Rick Stockstill now running the show, Daniels becomes the face of an offense trying to find some order in a messy stretch. Stockstill made it clear he still believes in the quarterback, even with the uneven play that has defined both Daniels’ season and FSU’s.
“I got a lot of confidence in Ashton,” FSU interim head coach Rick Stockstill said. “Sometimes I think we put too much on his plate, and we don’t give him the opportunity to play free.”
That’s the tension with Daniels. The tools are obvious: he can run, escape pressure and make plays outside the pocket.
He has also shown he can light it up when things are rolling. In a home rout of Virginia, he ran for five touchdowns.
At Miami, he threw for four scores and added another on the ground in a double-overtime loss, though that total did not include a touchdown pass wiped out by holding or what Norvell called a “simultaneous possession” TD pass to Duce Robinson on the second Hail Mary attempt.
But the rough stretches have been just as loud. Daniels threw three interceptions in the loss at Alabama, then followed that with three more picks and a fumble against Clemson. He now leads the ACC with 11 interceptions, a number that has piled up fast and often come in losses.
Even in the 50-36 defeat at Alabama, Daniels accounted for four touchdowns - two passing and two rushing - but too many of his big statistical nights have ended the same way: with Florida State on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
Now the Seminoles are trying to give him a reset. Stockstill and offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr., who has taken over play-calling duties, have a chance to reshape the offense as FSU (3-5, 1-4 ACC) heads to Boston College (4-4, 2-3) on Saturday at noon on ACC Network. Stockstill said there could be “subtle changes” on both sides of the ball.
That matters because the Seminoles are walking into this one short-handed. Duce Robinson is out for the season with a knee injury, and top running backs Ousmane Kromah and Samuel Singleton Jr. are also unavailable. That leaves FSU thin at tailback and possibly leaning on freshman Amari Thomas, its fourth option at the position.
Daniels, meanwhile, is the team’s top healthy runner and has 12 rushing touchdowns. The receiving room still has Micahi Danzy, Jayvan Boggs, Jasen Lopez and Devin Carter, but Robinson’s absence changes the shape of the offense and could put even more on Daniels’ shoulders.
That’s where Stockstill and Harris may need to be careful. Daniels’ best traits are easy to identify: he throws a good deep ball, can deliver from outside the pocket and has the strength to move the chains with his legs. The challenge is keeping him from doing too much.
“He throws a good deep ball,” Stockstill said. “He can throw the ball outside the pocket on the move.
He is a strong, powerful runner that can move the sticks for you. I think he does a lot of good things.
“And, to me, we just don’t overload him. That’s the worst thing you can do with a quarterback is put so much on his plate.”
Boston College’s pass defense gives FSU a possible opening. The Eagles rank No. 35 in the FBS against the pass, allowing 188.3 yards per game. Harris Jr. also hasn’t called plays since his time on Gus Malzahn’s UCF staff in 2024, so there’s at least some mystery around how the Seminoles will look.
The injury list keeps growing for Florida State, too. Defensive linemen Deante McCray and Kevin Wynn are among the 12 players out for the Boston College game.
Running back Tre’ Wisner and safety K.J. Kirkland are questionable, while cornerback Ja’Bril Rawls and linebacker Caleb LaVallee are probable, according to FSU’s initial availability report released Wednesday night.

The Seminoles are trying to reset quickly after a three-game skid, with Rick Stockstill taking over as interim coach and immediately facing a physical road game. Boston College Faces Another Huge Test With Stanford Coming To Town
Boston College gets one more chance to make a statement in the regular-season finale, and the timing could hardly be more difficult. Boston College Faces A Dangerous Florida State Test At The Worst Time
Boston College is heading into an ACC game with a lot on the line for both sides, and the timing makes it especially tricky. The Eagles are still chasing bowl eligibility, while Florida State is trying to steady itself after a turbulent stretch and keep its own postseason hopes alive. Even with the Seminoles dealing with setbacks and a coaching change, this is still the kind of matchup that can swing a season in either direction.
Florida State has not looked like a team simply trying to get through the schedule, either. The Seminoles have continued to produce plenty on offense despite the upheaval, which is a warning sign for a Boston College team that cannot afford a slow start or a loose defensive performance. For the Eagles, the challenge is not just surviving the moment, but doing it against a program that still has enough firepower to make this a dangerous spot. [Read more 🡒]
