Boston College’s season finally got moving Saturday night, and it came with plenty of swings before the Eagles could walk off with a 28-21 win over Rutgers.
After opening the year with a 34-15 loss to Cincinnati, Boston College came out with urgency and made the most of early chances. The Eagles forced a fourth-down stop on Rutgers’ opening drive when the Scarlet Knights tried their own version of the tush push, and that set the tone for a first quarter that belonged to BC.
Boston College took over and kept things simple at first. On fourth down, Mason McKenzie hit Javarius Green for eight yards, and the very next snap turned into the first touchdown of the night when Evan Dickens burst in from 19 yards out. Luca Lumbardo’s extra point made it 7-0.
Rutgers answered with a 22-yard run from Antwan Raymond and a 16-yard completion to Jordin Houston, but the drive unraveled when AJ Surace tried to force a pass to Houston and Charlie Comella came away with the interception. Boston College quickly turned that takeaway into more points, as McKenzie connected on a 53-yard strike to Landon Wright before finishing the drive himself on a 10-yard touchdown scramble. That pushed the Eagles ahead 14-0.
The Scarlet Knights still couldn’t find much traction, going four plays for nine yards on their next possession before punting. McKenzie then kept rolling, finding Reed Swanson and Dawson Pough for a combined 37 yards as Boston College stayed in command.
The Eagles added to the lead early in the second quarter, though they had to settle for a field goal after an illegal snap penalty, an 18-yard McKenzie scramble, a short Dickens run and two incompletions in the end zone. Lumbardo drilled the 46-yarder to make it 17-0.
Rutgers finally put together a long answer. The Scarlet Knights used a 16-play march to get on the board with a touchdown catch by Raymond, but the drive also came with a scary injury to Bodie Kahoun on the Boston College defense.
Even with the score, the Eagles had the better footing, and they closed the half with another scoring drive. McKenzie picked up 18 yards on the ground, Rutgers was flagged offsides, and an eight-yard completion to Green set up Lumbardo for a 46-yard field goal.
Boston College went into halftime up 20-7.
The third quarter got choppy fast. Boston College went three-and-out to open the half, then Rutgers drove from its own 26 to the Eagles’ 19 before Surace was intercepted by Carter Davis.
The Eagles couldn’t build on it, though, as McKenzie’s 19-yard scramble was followed by a fumble from Evan Dickens. Rutgers took advantage on the other side, with KJ Duff catching three passes for 28 yards and capping the drive with a four-yard touchdown.
Then McKenzie tried to squeeze a throw under pressure and Moses Walker grabbed the interception, suddenly pulling Rutgers right back into the game.
Boston College needed a response in the fourth, and Rutgers briefly handed them one with a turnover on downs. The Eagles leaned on Raymond, but couldn’t finish the drive, and when Surace tried to sneak on 4th and 1, Anthony Palano stuffed him. Boston College still couldn’t cash in and punted with 12:44 left.
Rutgers kept pressing. Raymond ripped off 19 rushing yards on the next drive, and then Surace threw his third interception of the night on a no-huddle play at the BC 21, with Palano making the pick.
That gave McKenzie and the Eagles another shot, and they delivered the biggest play of the night. Facing pressure on 3rd and 6, McKenzie rolled right, kept the play alive, and found a wide-open Dawson Pough for a 78-yard touchdown.
Boston College led 28-14, but Rutgers wasn’t finished.
Surace answered with a 60-yard touchdown strike to Duff, trimming it to 28-21. Then McKenzie gave the ball right back with an interception, leaving Rutgers with 2:56 to tie or take the lead.
Boston College’s defense held firm, forcing a 4th and 3 after a checkdown to Raymond. Surace found Duff for eight yards to keep the drive alive, but Anthony Palano sealed it on the next play with another interception.
McKenzie finished 18 of 29 for 252 yards, one passing touchdown, and 94 rushing yards with a rushing score. Pough led the Eagles with four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown.
For Rutgers, Surace threw for 230 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. Raymond carried 27 times for 134 yards, while Duff caught eight passes for 137 yards and two scores.

Boston College got an unnerving scene Saturday night when linebacker Bodie Kahoun went down in the game against Rutgers and had to be taken off the field in an ambulance. The injury came on a tackle near midfield, cutting short what had been an active night for Kahoun, who had already piled up six tackles before the stoppage.
The immediate concern was obviously bigger than the scoreboard, and the Eagles did get a first encouraging update afterward. Boston Colleges 28-21 win over Rutgers in the 2026 Red Bandanna Game finally gave the Eagles a much-needed result, and Mason McKenzie gave the offense a jolt in his first start at quarterback.
