Boston College Falls Again as Florida State Takes Control Late

Despite a late push from Boston Colleges top scorers, the Eagles couldnt close the gap on the road as Florida State held firm for the win.

Florida State Holds Off Late Push from Boston College, Hands Eagles 14th Straight ACC Loss

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Boston College women’s basketball showed plenty of fight Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong Florida State squad on the road. Despite trimming a 22-point deficit to just six in the fourth quarter, the Eagles came up short in an 85-76 loss at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

The loss drops BC to 4-23 overall and 0-14 in ACC play, while Florida State improves to 9-16 and 4-9 in the conference.

There were bright spots for the Eagles, particularly in the backcourt. Sophomore Lily Carmody matched her season high with 18 points on an efficient 6-of-12 shooting night, adding four rebounds and three assists in a well-rounded performance. She did most of her damage at the line, going 6-for-7, and was a steady presence during BC’s second-quarter surge.

Teionni McDaniel provided a major spark off the bench, also scoring 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting. It was her most productive outing in ACC play, and she delivered some key buckets late, including four straight points in the final minute to pull BC within six at 82-76.

But that was as close as the Eagles would get. Florida State closed it out at the free throw line, keeping BC at arm’s length down the stretch.

Erin Houpt chipped in 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers that helped ignite Boston College’s rally in the second quarter. She continues to be a reliable perimeter threat, now shooting an impressive 46.9% from deep on the season. Athena Tomlinson added valuable minutes as well, leading the team with five rebounds and four assists.

The game looked like it might get out of hand early. Florida State built a 22-point cushion in the second quarter, threatening to run away with it.

But the Eagles responded with a 9-0 run, sparked by a Houpt three, that cut the deficit to 13. Then, with just over a minute left in the half, Carmody and Tomlinson strung together back-to-back buckets to bring it to 48-38 at the break.

That momentum carried into the second half, but Florida State never fully relinquished control. Every time BC threatened, the Seminoles had an answer. The Eagles never got closer than six in the final frame, despite outscoring FSU in the fourth quarter.

It was another example of Boston College showing resilience, even in a tough season where wins have been hard to come by. The trio of Carmody, McDaniel, and Houpt combined for 48 of the team’s 76 points, offering a glimpse of the offensive potential that’s starting to emerge, even as the losses pile up.

The Eagles will try to snap their conference skid on Sunday when they return home to Conte Forum to take on Miami at noon.
