Boston College gets its first conference test of 2026 on Saturday at noon ET, and the assignment is a sharp one: Virginia Tech comes to town unbeaten and rolling.
The Eagles enter at 2-1 after taking care of Maine and Rutgers, but the lone blemish still hangs there from the season opener at Cincinnati. Virginia Tech has yet to stumble, and the numbers through three games tell the story - the Hokies have piled up a 152-50 scoring edge over VMI, Old Dominion and Maryland.
Bill O’Brien didn’t spend much time soft-pedaling the matchup after practice Tuesday.
“This is a huge challenge for us all the way across the board,” BC head coach Bill O’Brien said of facing Virginia Tech after practice Tuesday. “Virginia Tech is an excellent football team in all areas.
Very well-coached, big, strong, fast. So it’s going to be a big challenge for us.”
Virginia Tech is coming off a 35-26 road win over Maryland last Saturday. Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer led the way by throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns while completing 31 of 39 passes. Tight end Luke Reynolds was a major factor too, finishing with 12 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Boston College also played last Saturday and beat Maine 22-16 at home. Evan Dickens powered the ground game with 102 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Mason McKenzie added 53 rushing yards, threw for 173 yards and a touchdown, and also had two interceptions.
The teams last met on Oct. 17, 2024, in Blacksburg during O’Brien’s first season at BC, and Virginia Tech handled the Eagles 42-21.
All told, the Hokies hold a 22-11 edge in the all-time series.

Boston College Is Walking Into A Very Different Virginia Tech Offense
Bill OBrien and James Franklin know each other well enough to appreciate the kind of program-building job both men have been asked to do at Boston College and Virginia Tech. OBriens track record includes helping stabilize Penn State in a difficult stretch before moving on to the NFL, while Franklin has done similar work at Vanderbilt and Penn State before landing in Blacksburg. Now their paths cross again with both programs trying to keep moving forward in their own way.
The matchup matters because Virginia Tech no longer looks like the same offense Boston College might remember from Franklins earlier stops.
