Boston College got what it needed Saturday: a win. It just did it the hard way.
The Eagles held off Maine 22-16 in Chestnut Hill, surviving a game that never really felt comfortable despite BC leading from start to finish. Maine came in as a 38.5-point underdog, but the Black Bears kept hanging around and had the home side sweating all the way to the final whistle.
BC opened fast and built a 16-0 lead in the first quarter behind Evan Dickens’ 39-yard rushing touchdown, a safety created by KJ Sampson’s pressure that forced a hold, and Jonathan Montague Jr.’s 31-yard touchdown catch from Mason McKenzie. After that, though, the Eagles’ offense stalled and the game tightened.
McKenzie finished with two interceptions, and BC’s red-zone issues defined the afternoon. The Eagles made five trips inside the red zone and came away without a touchdown on any of them. They also struggled on money downs, going 4-for-12 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down.
“I have to do a better job, [and] it starts with me,” BC head coach Bill O’Brien said in his postgame press conference. “There’s some things we just have to do a better job with, especially offensively, but a lot of missed opportunities.
We had the ball inside the 10-yard line, I don’t know, maybe four or five times, didn’t do a good job of executing down there. [I] probably need to design some better plays.”
“But in the end, you know what it is? It’s a win.
It’s a win. And I’ve been doing this a long time, and you can never take winning for granted.
Ever. And so there’s always things to build on, but I was proud of those guys, I thought the defense played their heart out, and we won the game.”
Maine started clawing back in the second quarter after Jamaree Gibson picked off McKenzie at the Maine 28 and returned it 42 yards to the BC 30. The Black Bears turned that turnover into a field goal, and after Luca Lombardo answered with a 26-yard kick to make it 19-3, Maine closed the half with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped by Eddie Buehler’s five-yard touchdown pass to Nick Laughlin with nine seconds left.
“We definitely have to put teams away,” safety KP Price, who had two interceptions and a tackle for loss in the win, said. “We can be up, but at the same time, you have to know how to finish and not get too ahead of ourselves."
The second half brought more of the same kind of tension. McKenzie was intercepted again on BC’s first drive after the break, this time at the Eagles’ five-yard line, but Maine gave it right back three plays later when Price came up with his second pick of the day.
BC still couldn’t finish drives with touchdowns, but Lombardo added another 26-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 22-10.
“I have to watch the film, but not good,” O’Brien said of BC’s red-zone troubles. “Again, it starts with me, I’ve got to do a better job with the plays down there.
I thought we had some plays we missed. I thought we had [Jaedn] Skeete on one, missed it.
Didn’t run the ball well down there … we were not able to do that. Some of the passes that were called, it didn’t seem like anybody was open, so give Maine credit.
… We have to score touchdowns down there.”
Maine made one last push in the fourth quarter when Buehler threw his second touchdown, a seven-yard completion to Laughlin with 4:38 remaining. Samuel Tremblay’s extra-point try was blocked at the line of scrimmage by Micah Amedee, leaving the score at 22-16.
From there, BC’s final drive kept the ball away long enough to close it out and secure the Eagles’ second win of the season.
“I’ve coached for a lot of great coaches,” O’Brien said. “A lot of great coaches.
They said no matter what, when you win, cherish the victory. … you’re gonna write what you write, our fans are gonna think [what they think], and I totally understand that. … But we won.”

Boston College got the result it needed against Maine, but it did not come with much comfort in a 22-16 escape at Alumni Stadium in Week 3. The Eagles mixed rushing and passing touchdowns and did enough offensively to stay in front, yet the game was defined just as much by turnovers and defensive sloppiness as it was by the scoring plays that helped them edge an FCS opponent.
The late stages only added to the uneasy feeling around it, with Maine keeping the pressure on and finding a way to make the finish tense. Boston College still held on, but the way the margin was trimmed down left plenty for the Eagles to sort through before the schedule gets any tougher. [Read more 🡒]
Boston College Volleyball Keeps Rolling With Bigger Test Still Ahead
Boston College kept its strong start rolling at the Dartmouth Invitational, dispatching Binghamton in straight sets to move to 9-1. Audrey Ross led the way for the Eagles with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Lucie Vesela and Lucy Mott each finished with 19 assists as the offense stayed balanced and the defense kept Binghamton from finding much rhythm.
The win also showed how cleanly BC can control a match when it is serving and passing well enough to stay on the front foot. The next challenge is a more revealing one, though, with Dartmouth waiting in the tournament and a chance for the Eagles to test that momentum against a stronger measuring stick. [Read more 🡒]
