The Boston College softball team is gearing up for a challenging ACC opener against the unbeaten North Carolina Tar Heels. With a current record of 5-10, the Eagles are looking to make a statement in the three-game series starting this Friday at 6 p.m. Following this, they’ll head to North Carolina A&T for a midweek clash on March 3.
Recent Performance
The Eagles had a mixed showing at the USF Invitational, finishing with a 1-4 record. They kicked off the tournament with a solid 10-7 win over Marist, thanks in large part to freshman standout Kae DePerio.
DePerio was on fire, racking up 12 hits and maintaining a .533 batting average over the weekend. In the pitching department, Kelly Colleran was impressive, striking out 13 batters against Marist, contributing to a team total of 14 strikeouts in that game - the highest since 2022.
Offensively, the Eagles’ 15 hits against Marist marked their best single-game performance since March 2019. Emma Knight also continued her impressive form, securing her third multi-RBI game of the season against Indiana.
Freshman Phenomenon
Kae DePerio was rightfully named ACC Freshman of the Week. Her performance was nothing short of spectacular, hitting .750 (12-for-16) and scoring 10 runs.
DePerio also showcased her discipline at the plate with five walks, resulting in an .810 on-base percentage. Defensively, she maintained a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
She currently leads the team with a .553 batting average and a .611 on-base percentage.
Ptak Power
Sophomore Abby Ptak continues to be a key player for the Eagles. Over the past weekend, she posted an .882 slugging percentage and a .471 batting average, with eight hits that included two doubles, a triple, and a home run, driving in four runs.
Ptak leads the team in slugging percentage (.681), hits (21), and RBIs (10), extending her hitting streak to 12 games. She ranks seventh in the conference with 23 hits.
Facing the Tar Heels
Historically, Boston College has struggled against UNC, with a 5-42 record. The Tar Heels, however, are on a roll, entering the weekend undefeated at 14-0.
Junior Emily LeGette has been a standout, earning Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player of the Week honors. She hit five home runs last week, including two in one inning, and boasts a .611 batting average.
UNC leads the ACC in several offensive categories, including batting average (.439) and home runs (35).
Upcoming Against North Carolina A&T
The Eagles will also face North Carolina A&T, who hold a 7-9 record after a strong showing at the Blues City Invitational. Sophomore Tyra Robinson and junior Jamari Moss lead the Aggies' offense, while junior Aaliyah Williams anchors their pitching staff. The Aggies have a few games lined up before meeting the Eagles.
Following these matchups, Boston College will head to the Hokie Invite in Salem, Va., where they’ll take on Michigan, Radford, and JMU, starting March 5. This stretch of games will be crucial for the Eagles as they look to gain momentum in the season.
