CHESTNUT HILL - Boston College needed this one, Rutgers needed this one, and the Red Bandanna Game delivered exactly the kind of night that can turn a shaky start into something sturdier.
On a Friday that carried the weight of the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, BC’s annual tribute to Welles Crowther sat at the center of everything. Crowther, the former Eagles lacrosse player known as The Man in the Red Bandanna, saved up to 18 people in the World Trade Center’s South Tower before dying that day. This week, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom.
The emotion of the night showed up fast on the field. Boston College scored on its first three possessions, the defense kept slamming the door, and the Eagles took down Rutgers 28-21 for their first win of the season.
“I think this team believes that they can win,” BC head coach Bill O’Brien said. “They were frustrated from last week, the coaching staff was frustrated.
We had a good week, a short week, which was good because we could turn the page really fast. It is the 25th anniversary of a terrible day in which a very important person in the BC community, Welles Crowther, saved upward of 18 people and died that day, so this game is such an important game to Boston College.”
Boston College built a 20-7 halftime lead, then spent the second half hanging on through turnovers, fourth-down stands and a pair of interceptions that kept Rutgers from fully seizing control. The Eagles picked off Scarlet Knights quarterback AJ Surace four times and added three fourth-down stops to help finish the job.
Quarterback Mason McKenzie was the engine. The redshirt junior, who BC pulled from Division II Saginaw Valley State, threw for 252 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 95 yards and another score. His biggest strike came with 7:06 left, when he rolled right and found Dawson Pough alone behind the defense for a 78-yard touchdown that looked like the knockout blow.
“When you see him, you just say don’t miss,” McKenzie said. “He did a great job of doing what he was taught on a scramble drill and he got into space and I was able to hit him.”
Rutgers answered almost immediately. KJ Duff grabbed a 60-yard touchdown pass just 48 seconds later to cut it to 28-21.
BC then helped the Scarlet Knights stay alive when McKenzie was intercepted at the Rutgers 38 with three minutes remaining. But Anthony Palano stepped in with his second interception of the game to swing things back to the Eagles.
From there, a McKenzie swing pass to Evan Dickens - who had opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run - moved the chains on third-and-7 and effectively ended it.
The game matched two teams trying to steady themselves after ugly opening losses. Rutgers had dropped a 37-21 decision to UMass, which ended the nation’s longest FBS losing streak at 16. Boston College had been outplayed at Cincinnati, falling 34-18 after giving up the first 24 points.
BC’s defense set the tone early and never let Rutgers get comfortable. The Scarlet Knights went for it on fourth-and-1 from their own 34 on the opening drive, but Surace was stuffed.
On the next possession, Xaverian product Charlie Comella grabbed the first interception of his BC career, and the Eagles cashed that in with McKenzie’s 10-yard touchdown run. BC also sacked Surace three times in the first half.
Rutgers did manage one long march, a 15-play drive that took 8:29 off the clock and ended with Antwan Raymond’s 4-yard touchdown catch. That possession came with a scary moment when linebacker Bodie Kahoun suffered an apparent neck injury while making a tackle and had to be taken off the field by ambulance. O’Brien said after the game that he had feeling in his extremities.
Boston College still had time to add to its lead before halftime, and Rutgers helped with that too. An offside penalty on fourth down gave BC a fresh set of downs with 15 seconds left, and then the Scarlet Knights dropped into a prevent look that opened the door for McKenzie to hit Green for 8 yards. That set up Lucas Lombardo’s 46-yard field goal and a 20-7 cushion at the break.
BC is now 6-7 in Red Bandanna Games.
“It was a great atmosphere, super exciting,” McKenzie said. “For my first game at Alumni to be the Red Bandanna Game was pretty cool. Coach O’Brien did a great job of showing us what the game really meant throughout the week and I’m just happy we got the win for the fanbase and the Crowther family.”
