Stephen Curry’s future with the Warriors is still pointed toward Golden State, but Mike Dunleavy made one thing clear on Tuesday: if Curry ever asks for a change, the franchise won’t slam the door shut.
During a virtual session with reporters, the Warriors general manager addressed both the team’s quiet offseason and the status of Curry, who is entering the final year of his contract. Dunleavy said he believes Curry will stay put, while also stressing that the two-time MVP has “earned the right to do what he wants.”
“Ultimately it's his call, his decision, whether that's allowing his contract to run out and move on,” Dunleavy said. “Look, if he comes to me and wants to be moved, [controlling owner] Joe [Lacob] and I will talk it through.
We wouldn't love it. But he's earned the right to do what he wants.
“But as far as the messaging or any idea that he'd be anywhere else, that's not a thing we're looking at or he's looking at.”
Curry becomes eligible to sign an extension with the Warriors on Aug. 29.
The remarks landed in the middle of a stretch where Celtics fans have been having a little fun with the idea of Curry in Boston.
