That kind of update keeps the reunion talk alive for Philadelphia, a team that has been linked to Simmons since last summer without ever getting anything over the finish line.
The timing matters, too. The 76ers still have an open roster spot, and while they cannot sign anyone at the moment, they could create room by moving on from a player. That only becomes relevant, of course, if the front office actually wants to revisit the Simmons idea.
And there are basketball reasons for that discussion to keep simmering. Philadelphia still needs more size and depth in the frontcourt, and the bench could use another natural playmaker. Those are two areas where Simmons, even far from his All-Star peak, still offers something useful.
His willingness to take a veteran’s minimum deal only adds to the appeal. The 76ers also have a potential edge because of LeBron James, with Simmons tied to him in some degree as a Klutch client. With multiple teams already showing interest in testing Simmons’ current form, Philadelphia would not be entering a quiet market.
Simmons has already said he would be open to a reunion with the 76ers, so that part of the equation is already on the table. Both sides still have unfinished business after his departure from the franchise, and while there is still some leftover negativity from that split, the risk would be much smaller this time around.
So the rumor survives, and probably won’t be disappearing soon. At this point, the 76ers may need to give real thought to what a second run with their former All-Star would look like, even if it’s on a much smaller scale than before.
