Paul George may be walking into Boston without the kind of guardrails plenty of people expected.
Given his injury history, a minutes restriction seemed like the obvious play after the trade. The Celtics have used that approach before, most notably with Al Horford, who was rested on back-to-backs during his final three years with the team. But so far, there’s been no confirmation that Boston plans to do the same with George.
That became part of the buzz around Celtics Media Day, where the message seemed to be that George won’t be sitting unless he has to. Even Hugo Gonzalez sounded a little surprised when the topic of George’s absence came up.
The Horford blueprint was laid out before it took effect, with The Athletic’s Jared Weiss reporting on it during the offseason. Boston then leaned on Luke Kornet, Blake Griffin, Neemias Queta, and even Mike Muscala to help cover the minutes Horford would normally have taken.
It was a messy setup, but it worked, and it kept Horford fresh for the postseason. That’s why plenty of people assumed the Celtics would take the same route with George, who is around the same age Horford was at that point.
Instead, Boston may be betting that George can hold up without being handled quite that cautiously. Another possibility is that the Celtics simply spread the workload around their wing group, since they have more options there than just George and Jayson Tatum.
Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, and Ron Harper Jr. have all shown enough to get real run when needed. That could mean George lands somewhere in the 25- to 27-minute range rather than being shut down for entire games.
Nothing is locked in yet, but the lack of any reported restriction is telling with the season about to start. The same seems to be true for Mitchell Robinson, which suggests Boston is confident both players will be ready to go.

Celtics Face A Bigger Paul George Decision Than Fans Realize
Even with age, injury history and a hefty contract attached, Paul George still has enough standing around the league that teams have not written him off as a difference-maker. An NBA executive told Sean Deveney that George continues to carry considerable value, which helps explain why his arrival in Boston has remained a topic of real interest rather than a passing roster note.
George has also sounded upbeat about landing with the Celtics and has made clear he would like to stick around. The larger question is how Boston sees him as the season unfolds, because the teams long-term plan for him is still unsettled and the answer will say a lot about where this roster is headed next. Payton Pritchard Is About To Face Bostons Biggest New Test
Payton Pritchard has spent his Celtics tenure turning steady growth into real trust, and last season made the leap as his most productive one yet. After improving each year in Boston, he earned Sixth Man of the Year honors in 2025 and gave the Celtics efficient scoring, playmaking and a burst off the bench that helped shape their second unit.
Now the challenge changes. With Jaylen Brown gone to Philadelphia, Pritchard is set to shoulder a bigger creation load alongside Jayson Tatum, and that kind of expanded responsibility brings a different level of scrutiny in Boston. The question is no longer whether he can help spark the offense in a reserve role, but whether he can keep that production steady while becoming a more central part of what the Celtics do next. Tacko Fall Hit With Brutal Setback At The Worst Time
Tacko Fall has hit a rough patch at exactly the wrong moment, suffering a left hip strain during 76ers training camp as he tries to keep his NBA opportunity alive. Fall is in the mix for a two-way contract spot while on an Exhibit 10 deal, a setup that already leaves little margin for error in a crowded camp environment.
The injury now puts him on a short-term pause, with the team set to reevaluate him in two weeks. If Philadelphia moves on and he is waived, Fall would still have a path to bonus money by landing with the 76ers G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, but first he has to get back on the floor and show he can stay in the fight.
