NFL Expert Calls Patriots Draft Pick A Bust

The Patriots' first-round draft choice Caleb Lomu might face an uphill challenge to prove his worth as Bleacher Report questions his potential impact before the season even begins.

The Patriots spent the offseason trying to shore up an offensive line that needed help, and that push has already created a tricky situation for first-round pick Caleb Lomu.

New England’s move to add versatile lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker points to a starting five that now includes Jared Wilson at center, with the rest of the group staying intact. That setup leaves Will Campbell’s long-term spot at left tackle still open to debate, which is part of why the Patriots used their first-round pick on Lomu.

But there’s a catch: Lomu is projected to be a backup swing tackle, not an immediate starter. With Campbell expected to stay on the left side and Morgan Moses locked in at right tackle, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton went as far as to tag Lomu as a bust before Week 1.

That’s not exactly the kind of label a rookie wants hanging over him before he’s played a snap, and Moton’s reasoning is rooted in the depth chart. As he put it:

"So, if Campbell and right tackle Morgan Moses are healthy, Lomu won't see the field. He doesn't have notable experience at guard and didn't take reps on the interior during the spring.

Unless New England changes its tune about Campbell's status as a starter, Lomu will be a wasted pick for at least this year."

It’s a harsh forecast, but one that lines up with how the Patriots appear to view Lomu right now. He was drafted as a depth option with the upside to become a starter later on, and there has been talk about him eventually replacing Moses after the upcoming season.

That would give New England long-term answers at both tackle spots, which is why the pick still makes sense on paper. The downside is obvious, though: using a first-rounder on a player who may not be in the starting lineup until Year 2 is not usually the kind of return teams want.

Still, Moton’s prediction seems aimed more at Lomu’s immediate role than his NFL future. If things break a certain way, Lomu could eventually step in for Campbell at left tackle. Or he could end up as Moses’ successor if Campbell keeps the job on the left side.

Either way, the Patriots’ offensive line questions are still very much alive, and Lomu’s path to the field is not as straightforward as a first-round pick usually hopes for.

Celtics Fans May Feel Very Different About That Jaylen Brown Trade Now

When Boston moved Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George and draft picks, it was the kind of deal that immediately invited second-guessing. Brown had been a centerpiece in Boston, and any swap built around an older star and future assets was always going to be judged by how the next few seasons played out rather than by the initial reaction alone.

Now the long view looks even more complicated for Celtics fans, because the leagues latest scrutiny around Kawhi Leonard has only added to the sense that star-player trades can turn on factors no one sees coming. Bostons return from Philadelphia includes a pick that could carry real weight down the line, and the value of any future asset in this kind of deal often depends on how quickly a contenders window shifts. Brad Stevens Somehow Changed The Red Sox Mood In Boston

The Celtics blockbuster move involving Jaylen Brown and Paul George landed at just about the same time the Red Sox started heating up, and in a city that lives and breathes its sports moods, the timing has been impossible to ignore. There is no real connection between the two, of course, but Boston has a long memory for coincidences that feel bigger than they are, especially when one teams headline seems to line up with anothers surge.

Since that trade, the Red Sox have kept winning, turning the kind of random overlap fans joke about into a small running story around town. The streak has stretched long enough to make the calendar feel like part of the narrative, with Bostons baseball team carrying the positive energy all the way to the break and leaving the kind of lingering question sports fans love to ask, even when they know better. Celtics May Be Seeing Dillon Mitchell Answer His Biggest Red Flag

Dillon Mitchell arrived in Boston with one obvious question hanging over his game, and Summer League has offered the Celtics at least a promising early answer. The second-round picks shooting was a concern after a rough three-point showing in college, but his jumper has looked smoother in Las Vegas, with Bostons coaching staff working alongside him to clean up the mechanics and give him a more reliable base to build on.

Mitchell has also played with more confidence, which matters just as much for a young wing trying to carve out a role. The Celtics have made his development a priority since the draft, and Mitchell has embraced the process, knowing the path forward is about repetition, comfort and proving the shot can hold up when the games get real.
