Kevin Garnett says a moment of silence from Kobe Bryant helped push him toward Boston.
On The Out of Mud Podcast, Garnett said the Lakers were in the mix for him in 2007 after his run with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but getting Bryant on the phone never happened. In Garnett’s telling, that lack of response mattered.
“I talked to Chauncey [Billups], and Chauncey was a real friend,” Garnett said. “We was in the summertime, we was all working out, and he was like, ‘Man, you got to move on, man.
I know you don't want to, but you're going to look up and you're going to have exhausted all your great years here, bro.' That was the first time I heard that where I actually listened to it, and it touched me.”
That conversation with Billups helped Garnett decide it was time for a new start. He said he reached out to Kevin McHale and then moved toward a different situation, which eventually led him to Boston.
“Then I just called Kevin [McHale] and said, ‘Yeah, let's go ahead and start to find another situation. This ain't working for me.'
So then him and Danny [Ainge] were friends, and they started that, and it made sense. I had played with Paul before, and I had played with Ray, but not officially.
Ray's from South Carolina, so I knew him. So I liked it.”
Garnett said the Lakers and Phoenix Suns were among his options, but Bryant’s silence stood out to him. He also used the word “arrogant” to describe Bryant’s approach in that moment, and said that is what sent him to Boston instead.
“Couldn't get Kobe on the phone,” Bryant said. “He was acting real arrogant.
So I was like, ‘You know what? I'm just going to [go with] them.'
And that's how I ended up in Boston. It was perfect.”
Before he made the move, Garnett checked in with Antoine Walker, who gave him advice about Paul Pierce and what would matter once he got to Boston.
“I had to holler at Antoine [Walker] before I went to Boston, though. That's when he gave me the lick on P.
Like, ‘If you're going to play with Paul, Paul cares about these things.' He told me what worked with them and what didn't work with them, and I took that to heart.”
The decision worked out in a big way. In 2008, Garnett and the Celtics beat Bryant and the Lakers in six games to win the NBA championship.
Even so, Garnett and Bryant never carried any real animosity. When Garnett was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021, he went in alongside Bryant, who died the year before, and Garnett said he was deeply thankful for that honor.

Celtics Get A Chance To Expose One Early Bulls Weakness
The Celtics are about to get an early look at one of Chicagos most obvious problems, and it comes in an area Boston usually likes to stress anyway. Through the first stretch of the season, the Bulls have had a hard time making shots from deep, which makes this matchup a chance for the Celtics to close out hard, contest cleanly and see whether Chicago can generate offense some other way.
For Boston, that kind of test matters because the Bulls are still willing to launch from outside, even if the results have been rough. If the Celtics can turn those attempts into a night of rushed looks and missed opportunities, they could help determine whether Chicagos perimeter issues are just a small-sample slump or something more troubling. Luka Garza Just Gave Celtics Fans A Real Reason To Trust Him
Luka Garza got a real run in Bostons home opener against the Knicks, and he made it hard to ignore him. With the Celtics other centers slowed by foul trouble, Garza logged significant minutes and gave the front line a lift with a timely three, defensive stops and work on the offensive glass in a 107-103 win that had plenty of swing moments.
For a Celtics team that needs energy and dependable support behind its primary big men, that kind of contribution matters. Garza did more than simply hold down the fort, he helped stabilize the rotation and showed he can be part of the answer when the game gets messy inside. [Read more 🡒]
Scalabrine Just Made The Celtics Brown Tatum Drama Much Messier
The Celtics ongoing star dynamic got a lot more complicated this week when Brian Scalabrine weighed in on SiriusXMs NBA Radio and added another layer to the long-running Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum conversation. Brown has already been at the center of plenty of speculation around how he fit in Bostons hierarchy, but Scalabrines comments pushed the discussion beyond simple chemistry and back into the teams internal business at the time.
Scalabrine suggested Browns version of the story may not fully line up with how things actually unfolded, particularly around the trade chatter and the tension with Tatum. For a Celtics team that has spent years trying to balance two elite wings in the same locker room, the details matter, and any fresh reporting on what Brown wanted, who he wanted it from, and how that all intersects with his relationship with Tatum only makes the whole saga harder to sort out.
