In Friday's showdown against the Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics' Jordan Walsh made a triumphant return to the court after sitting out the last six games. With Jayson Tatum back in action, Walsh had been watching from the sidelines as rookies like Hugo Gonzalez and two-way player Ron Harper Jr. took the stage. But against Atlanta, Walsh seized his opportunity, logging 27 impactful minutes that showcased his defensive prowess.
Walsh's presence was felt across the court, using his physicality and length to disrupt the Hawks' offensive flow. He was a defensive force, making life difficult for Atlanta on the perimeter and proving why he's a valuable asset in Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.
Coach Mazzulla was full of praise after the Celtics' 109-102 victory over a red-hot Hawks team that had won 14 of their last 15 games. "It was huge," Mazzulla remarked about Walsh’s performance.
"Games call for toughness and physicality, and that’s something that he brings. His professionalism to stay ready speaks volumes about him.
He gave us great minutes, great energy, and great physicality."
Earlier in the season, Walsh was a fixture in the starting lineup, earning 20 starts out of 58 games-a significant increase from his previous seasons. However, as the season progressed, his playing time became inconsistent.
Some nights he was a key contributor, while other times he barely saw the floor. Recently, he found himself deep on the bench.
Walsh’s standout performance against the Hawks served as a reminder of his defensive capabilities and the value he adds to the team. With Jaylen Brown sidelined due to injury, Walsh made the most of his opportunity, reminding everyone of his potential impact.
Whether he remains in the rotation once Brown returns is uncertain, but Walsh did what he needed to do-capitalize on his minutes and make a strong case for more playing time. The rest is out of his hands.
