Joe Mazzulla Is Setting A New Tone As Celtics Adjust

Luka Garza praises head coach Joe Mazzulla's unique training methods, including boxing sessions with star player Jayson Tatum, which are building team strength and morale amid off-season challenges.

Joe Mazzulla’s willingness to meet his players wherever they are apparently goes well beyond film sessions and game plans.

On Wednesday, the Celtics head coach made the trip to Indianola, Iowa, where he showed up at Luka Garza’s offseason camp for youngsters. It was another example of Mazzulla leaning into the leadership side of the job, and Garza clearly noticed.

The former Celtics big man also had one very specific reaction to the clip of Mazzulla working through boxing training with Jayson Tatum that went viral. Garza said he’d be interested in getting in on that action himself.

“I would definitely join in on some boxing. When it gets to jiu-jitsu and all that, coach Joe, he's got that too.

That's fun and challenging. It's cool to see him do it and how he commits himself to working hard.

We can see that as guys on his team. He's one of those coaches that you want to run through a brick wall for him,” Garza said, via Trey Redfield of Iowa 5 News.

That kind of buy-in doesn’t happen by accident. For Garza, seeing a head coach put in the work physically sends a message that carries inside the locker room.

Boston will need that edge. The Celtics already lost Jaylen Brown earlier this offseason in a trade, leaving them with a hole to fill as they head toward the new season. But if Mazzulla’s presence and approach are any indication, the team is entering that stretch with a group that looks ready for the grind.

Cavaliers Just Gave Celtics Fans Another Reason To Worry About The East

The Cavaliers have already put themselves in the conversation as a team the Celtics will have to measure against again, and their latest move only adds to that feel. Cleveland completed a trade to acquire Peyton Watson from the Nuggets, bringing in a player viewed as a versatile fit for a roster that already features James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.

For Boston, the bigger issue is less about one individual deal than the way it sharpens the picture in the East. A deeper, more adaptable Cavaliers group gives Cleveland another layer heading into the upcoming season, and the Celtics know those are the kinds of additions that can swing playoff matchups and complicate the road through the conference. Derrick White Just Spotlighted A Real Celtics Offensive Dilemma

Derrick Whites value to Boston has never really been in doubt, but last season offered a clearer look at how much the Celtics ask him to do when the offense shifts around Jayson Tatum. White had to create more of his own looks, and while his shot-making took a hit, his defensive impact and all-around usefulness still kept him central to what Boston wanted to be.

With Tatum back, the fit should look more familiar for White, and that matters for a player whose best work often comes when he can play a cleaner, more balanced role. For the Celtics, the bigger question is less about Whites place in the rotation and more about how much the offense can restore the version of him that fits best alongside their stars. [Read more 🡒]
