Jeff Teague didn’t leave much room for interpretation when he weighed in on Stephen Curry and Jaylen Brown.
Appearing on The Club 520 podcast, the former Celtics guard took aim at the conversation around The Ringer’s Top 50 NBA players list and zeroed in on what he sees as a generational bias in Curry’s favor. Teague’s point was simple: if Curry had been in Brown’s spot, the Celtics would have gone further in the 2025-26 playoffs without Jayson Tatum.
“I’m going off the current Stephen Curry, pull up his stats, Lou,” said Teague when his co-host brought up how people have a generational bias about Curry.
“If you put Steph Curry on the Boston Celtics and trade Jaylen Brown, they would have gone to the Conference Finals [in 2025-26],” Teague further added.
“I’m not saying Jaylen Brown didn’t hoop, but it don’t have the same effect as Steph… If you put Steph Curry around a team that’s really trying to win, bro. With some people that are actually 28, his whole team is 37.
I’m just saying. Podz is my small forward, cuz.”
The numbers from 2025-26 give both sides something to work with. Brown put up 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game in 71 outings, while shooting 47.7% from the field and 34.7% from three. Curry, limited to 43 games because of patellofemoral pain syndrome, averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds on 46.8% shooting overall and 39.3% from deep.
There’s also the matter of what each player had around him. Brown operated with support from Derrick White and Payton Pritchard after Tatum went down, while Curry didn’t get that same kind of offensive help from the Warriors’ supporting cast. Golden State also lost Moses Moody to a knee injury for the rest of the season, which only made the climb harder.
At the same time, Brown is 30 and in the middle of his prime, while Curry is 38 and deep into the back end of his career. Brown was in MVP voting last season and carried the Celtics to the second seed in the East, so it’s not exactly a clean comparison.
Still, Teague’s argument seemed to be about more than raw production. His belief is that Curry’s experience, edge, and championship instincts would have changed the Celtics’ ceiling in the postseason. Curry has already been through a playoff collapse from a 3-1 lead once before, and Teague suggested he wouldn’t have let that happen again in the first round against the 76ers.
That’s the heart of the debate: a 38-year-old Curry at full health remains a force who can warp a playoff series, while Brown is still building toward the peak of his career. Teague clearly believes Curry’s presence would have pushed Boston even further.
