Jayson Tatum’s father, Justin Tatum, didn’t sugarcoat his view of the Celtics’ outlook for 2026-27.
Speaking on the Ultimate Dads Unplugged podcast, Tatum said Boston’s current setup doesn’t measure up to the teams at the top of the league.
“Right now, the roster is s***,” said Tatum.
That line went viral, but the full picture is a little more layered than a simple shot at the Celtics. The podcast itself is built around NBA dads offering blunt opinions, and Tatum’s comments came in that same spirit. Still, even with the rough language softened by context, the message was clear: Boston is not viewed as a championship team heading into 2026-27.
The Celtics are still projected to make the playoffs after moving on from Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and draft capital, but the source material makes it clear they are not being placed among the true contenders. The defending champion New York Knicks, the Cleveland Cavs, the Detroit Pistons, and the Sixers are all projected to finish ahead of Boston.
Philadelphia’s ceiling looks higher after adding LeBron James to a group that already includes Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, and Brown. The Celtics did make some moves of their own, with Mitchell Robinson coming in to help with rebounding and rim protection, while Mike Conley Jr. gives them another ball-handler and secondary facilitator.
Even so, the Eastern Conference picture has changed around them. The 2025 Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers are expected to be back in the mix as a dark horse, with Tyrese Haliburton set for what’s described as an anticipated comeback season after missing 2025-26 with a ruptured Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 Finals.
Indiana also brought in Kelly Oubre Jr. on a two-year, $16.5 million deal, while Larry Nance Jr. joined as well. Myles Turner’s spot from last summer’s move to the Milwaukee Bucks has been filled by Ivica Zubac, and Bennedict Mathurin was part of the Pacers’ trade with the LA Clippers.
Detroit also made a noticeable jump. The Pistons landed John Collins in a multi-team blockbuster and sent out Caris LeVert and Isaiah Stewart, with Taurean Prince and Garry Harris coming back in the deal. They also added Isaiah Joe after Tobias Harris left in free agency, giving them another efficient shooter to pair with Duncan Robinson.

Cleveland, meanwhile, is trying to bounce back after being swept 4-0 by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavs added Peyton Watson to a core that already features Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, and Evan Mobley.
There’s another major shift in the conference, too: Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to Miami. The Heat are trying to climb back into the title picture with Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and Andrew Wiggins, and they also signed Klay Thompson after his buyout with the Dallas Mavericks. The move gives Miami a new look after the Jimmy Butler era, during which the team reached the Finals in 2020 and 2023.
For Boston, the path back to contender status may come down to more than just George. Derrick White and Payton Pritchard are both expected to take on bigger roles, and their growth could reshape what the Celtics can be. The younger group matters, too: Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, and Ron Harper Jr. are all mentioned as players whose development could alter Boston’s outlook from 2025-26.
Those pieces helped Brown’s Celtics finish with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference last season. Now Tatum will need that same kind of support - maybe even more - if Boston is going to re-enter the championship conversation in 2026-27.
