Jayson Tatum made it plain Thursday: whatever the chatter says about his relationship with Jaylen Brown, there’s no bitterness on his side.
Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, Tatum pushed back on the speculation that has followed the blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers. He said the noise around their bond has taken on a life of its own.
"There's just so many different narratives and so many different opinions and speculations," Tatum said on the Dan Patrick Show. "For me, I love that guy.
What we were able to accomplish together in nine years - we went to the Conference Finals five times, we went to the championships twice, we won a championship, we've shared All-Star Games together. You can't talk about him without talking about him, and vice versa.
The success that we've had as two young kids growing up in this league and really just pushing each other.
"Unfortunately, the business of basketball is always going to play a part. Nobody has ever played together forever.
It's not like a thing to be sad or upset about. It's a thing to celebrate, you know, what we were able to do.
"He's a tremendous person and a player. I've got nothing but respect and wish him the best as he moves forward."
That’s a pretty direct message from Tatum, especially with so much attention on how the Celtics stars really felt about one another after the deal. Brown had already added to the conversation when he said he hadn’t really spoken to Tatum in the weeks after the trade.
Still, Tatum framed the whole thing as a partnership that delivered plenty. The Celtics drafted the two within a year of each other, and over nine seasons they grew into All-Stars and All-NBA players before helping Boston win the 2024 NBA championship.
The public debate around whether they were ever truly close has followed them for years, especially because pundits kept comparing them and asking whose team the Celtics actually were. But from Tatum’s point of view, the story is simple: respect first, appreciation always.
