Former Celtics Wing Draws Harsh New Debate About Value And Legacy

Paul George of the Celtics finds himself atop a dubious list as analysis reveals he's earned far more than his performance has justified, sparking debates about value in professional basketball.

Paul George has landed on a list nobody wants to headline.

HoopsHype released its ranking of the most overpaid players in NBA history on Friday, and George came in at No. 1, pushing former Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward off the top spot. The site’s Real Value metric, which estimates a player’s market worth, says George has been overpaid in 10 of his 16 NBA seasons.

The numbers HoopsHype attaches to that gap are eye-opening. It pegs George’s career value at $258.2 million, far below the $407.9 million he has actually earned.

Frank Urbina of HoopsHype wrote, "George went from barely making the Top 30 most overpaid players ever to taking the top overall spot from Gordon Hayward," wrote HoopsHype's Frank Urbina. "George has been overpaid by an unfathomable $85.2 million over the past two seasons, per our metric, peaking in 2024-25 with a $44.4 million overpay.

That season, George averaged 16.2 points on 43.0 percent shooting in 41 appearances for the Philadelphia 76ers while being paid $49.2 million, output that Real Value valued at $4.8 million."

And HoopsHype believes the ledger is only going to get worse for George from here. The 36-year-old is set to make $54.1 million in 2026-27, followed by a $56.6 million player option for 2027-28.

That label lands especially hard because George’s résumé is still loaded. He has spent nearly two decades as one of the league’s premier forwards, collecting nine All-Star nods, six All-NBA selections and four All-Defense honors.

His peak came in 2018-19 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, when he put up 28.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game. That season, he finished third in MVP voting and third in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

What has dragged his value down most recently is simple: he has not been on the floor enough. Since 2019-20, George has reached the 60-game mark in a regular season only once, a reality that makes his contract much harder to stomach.

Even so, the bigger picture around George remains clear. Basketball Reference gives him a 97.8 percent chance of making the Hall of Fame, which makes him a near-lock for Springfield.

So yes, the current label is brutal. A future Hall of Famer sitting atop the list of the NBA’s most overpaid players is a strange place to be - but that’s exactly where George finds himself.

Tatum And Brown Reunion Reopened An Awkward Celtics Breakup

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown found themselves on opposite sides for the first time in a preseason game, a reunion that carried more tension than nostalgia for two players who spent years as the Celtics defining duo. The matchup came after Brown was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers this summer, a move that reshaped Bostons long-running core and left plenty of questions about how the breakup came together.

Before the game, the two did not speak during warmups, a small detail that said plenty about the awkwardness surrounding the split. The Celtics have moved on to a new chapter, but the reason behind trading Brown still is not clear, and the status of his relationship with Tatum only adds to the intrigue whenever their paths cross again. Celtics Are Already Sorting Out One Big Jayson Tatum Question

Jayson Tatum is expected to be right where the Celtics need him on opening night, anchoring a reshaped starting group as Boston sorts through the lineup combinations that fit best around him. With Paul George and Derrick White projected to join him, the early question is less about Tatums place and more about which supporting pieces help the Celtics make the most of a roster that has changed this season.

Boston has already begun testing those options in camp, using players such as Mitchell Robinson and Jordan Walsh to see how different looks function with Tatum as the focal point. The coaching staff is still evaluating what the best balance looks like, and the experiments so far have made clear that the final answer around Tatum is still very much being sorted out. Paul George Just Sent Celtics Fans A Clear Jayson Tatum Message

Jayson Tatums next chapter in Boston is already drawing a different kind of partner than the one he had with Jaylen Brown. Brown and Tatum spent years carrying the Celtics as co-stars, with a competitive edge that often defined how the team was viewed, but Paul George is signaling a cleaner fit for what comes next after being traded to Boston in the Brown deal.

George has made it clear he does not want the spotlight framed as a two-man race, and that matters for how this partnership could be judged in Boston. Rather than chasing the label of the guy, he wants to complement Tatum and help push him into a higher conversation, which tells Celtics fans a lot about the tone George wants to set before the season even starts.
