In the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA, Charles Bassey has become quite the journeyman, having suited up for five teams since entering the league in 2021. This season, he’s been on a whirlwind tour with Ten-Day contracts, making stops with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Golden State Warriors before landing with the Boston Celtics in mid-March.
Bassey signed his first Ten-Day with the Celtics on March 15th, followed by a second this past Sunday. While the future remains uncertain, his time in Boston has been particularly noteworthy.
“The professionalism here is top-notch,” Bassey shared. “The coaches, the players - everything is direct and focused.
It’s a joy to be part of a team where everyone shows up ready to work, and they do it with a smile. It’s been a fantastic experience.”
This isn’t Bassey’s first rodeo with the Celtics. At 25, he spent the Summer League with them, expressing his desire to join a championship-caliber squad. Now, he’s witnessing firsthand the inner workings of the team, and it’s left a mark.
Even when workouts are optional, the commitment is palpable. Stars and role players alike hit the gym for rehab, on-court drills, or film sessions.
“When the coach says something’s optional, everyone still turns up,” Bassey noted. “That dedication helps the team grow and builds strong connections.
Seeing everyone in the gym, ready to work, is inspiring. It’s a culture of commitment.”
Familiarity has eased Bassey’s transition. He’s surrounded by teammates like Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, Jordan Walsh, Max Shulga, and Amari Williams, all from the Summer League roster. His college days included matchups against Luka Garza, and he’s crossed paths with Neemias Queta in the G League.
The coaching staff isn’t new to him either. Bassey has been honing his skills with player development coaches Nana Foulland and Steve Tchiechang since July, often working on post moves with fellow center Amari Williams.
“Working with the same coaches from the summer is comforting,” Bassey said. “It’s all familiar faces.”
As Bassey’s second Ten-Day contract nears its April 3rd expiration, the Celtics face roster decisions. They must maintain 14 players, and while Bassey is an option, they could also revisit former Ten-Day signee Dalano Banton.
For now, Bassey’s focus is unwavering.
“You’ve got to stay ready,” he emphasized. “Opportunities can come at any time. My job is to show I’m ready to contribute and help the team in any way possible.”
