The Celtics’ summer decision to move Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George turned heads for plenty of reasons, not least because it came after Boston had just blown a 3-1 series lead to Philadelphia in the playoffs. That alone made the deal hard to miss. But the bigger basketball question is what it means for Jayson Tatum now that the Celtics have finally cleared the runway for him.
For his entire Boston career, Tatum has shared the spotlight with Brown. The pair did win a championship together in 2024, but their partnership never quite looked seamless in the way some of the league’s best duos do.
They were productive, no question. They just weren’t always natural complements.
Part of that came down to how similar they were. Both were ball-dominant forwards who could space the floor, attack the rim, work in the midrange, and hold up defensively at roughly the same level.
Neither one was clearly the cut-first guy or the pure perimeter guy. They didn’t even spend much time separated by position.
Instead of fitting together like pieces of a clean puzzle, they often looked like two stars operating in parallel.
That made life trickier for Boston’s offense than it needed to be. And while plenty of fans are still frustrated by Brown’s exit, the move does remove the biggest obstacle to seeing Tatum as the undisputed top option. In other words, the Celtics are about to find out exactly what a prime Jayson Tatum looks like when the offense is fully his.
That’s the heart of the appeal here. Joe Mazzulla’s system has already been built around Tatum’s strengths.
He’s a high-level playmaker, especially for his position. He brings value as a team defender.
And even if his three-point shot isn’t as lethal as it was when he entered the league, he still has to be respected from deep.
Those traits fit right into Mazzulla Ball, where ball movement and spacing drive everything. With Brown gone, there’s less overlap and more room for Tatum to steer the whole thing. The Celtics should be able to put the ball in his hands even more often, and that should only sharpen what they want to do offensively.
There may be some early bumps as Boston adjusts. But the bigger picture is simple: Tatum is now the clear-cut No. 1 guy, and that should push him into a different tier altogether.
