Jalen Duren’s next move has a ripple effect far beyond Detroit, and the Celtics have plenty of reason to keep an eye on it.
The 22-year-old center is in the middle of contract negotiations with the Pistons after a breakout season that included an All-Star nod and third-team All-NBA honors. He was a huge piece of Detroit’s leap to the East’s top seed and a 60-win finish, but his playoff run was rough, and the money question has turned into a real standoff.
Duren is reportedly looking for a deal worth at least $200 million over five years. So far, Detroit hasn’t gotten anywhere close to that number. The relationship appears strained enough that Duren has distanced himself from the team this offseason and is seriously weighing the $9.6 million qualifying offer, a move that would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.
That opens the door to a very specific landing spot: Sacramento.
The Athletic has reported that the Kings are at the top of Duren’s list, and the interest is mutual. Detroit has not shown interest in a sign-and-trade, but if the threat of losing Duren for nothing keeps growing, that stance could shift. There’s also a path for Sacramento to create cap space next season and go after Duren at the max, pairing him with Darius Acuff Jr. in a young point guard-center foundation.
From Boston’s perspective, that would be the cleanest possible outcome.
The Pistons are supposed to be climbing, not taking a hit. Cade Cunningham is coming off a top-5 MVP finish, and Detroit already lost Isaiah Stewart and Tobias Harris from its frontcourt this offseason. If Duren walks, the damage would be massive and could force the Pistons to reset their path to contention.
And Sacramento? That’s about as harmless as a Duren destination can get for the Celtics. The Kings are in a full rebuild, they’re in the Western Conference, and the odds of them meeting Boston in a meaningful game anytime soon are extremely slim.
There’s another layer here, too. Boston owns a valuable pick swap with the Clippers in 2028, which means the Celtics want LA as bad as possible.
The Clippers have recently taken on a crippling penalty, and that could push them toward spending in free agency. Duren would fit as a prime target, and while that kind of move wouldn’t suddenly turn the Clippers into contenders, it could make them respectable enough to dull the value of Boston’s future pick.
If Duren ends up with the Kings instead, the Celtics get the best of both worlds: Detroit takes a major hit, Sacramento stays away from the Clippers, and another Western Conference team could rise above LA in the standings.
For Boston, that’s the kind of outcome that checks every box.
