The Boston Celtics have turned one of their own moves into a fresh headache, because the Philadelphia 76ers are now bringing in LeBron James.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the future first-ballot Hall of Famer is heading to the City of Brotherly Love. James then confirmed it himself.

For Boston, the part that stings is the opponent. The Celtics already sent Jaylen Brown to a rival, and doing that with the Los Angeles Lakers would have been rough enough. Instead, Brown is now on a Sixers team the Celtics will see six times this season, including two preseason games.
There’s also a very real chance Boston runs into Brown and Philadelphia in the playoffs at some point during Brown’s time with the franchise. If that happens, the challenge gets even tougher with James now alongside him.
Boston can point to its own confidence in the deal and the long-term benefits it expects to get from it. But if the Celtics had not made that trade with a bitter rival, the Sixers would not have landed James in the first place.
Philadelphia looked stuck before this. Beyond Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe’s rise, there wasn’t much to hang onto, and that was more about the future than the coming season.
Now the picture changes fast. Brown and James give the Sixers a real shot in an Eastern Conference that still feels wide open.
There are obvious questions, too. The heavy usage that comes with two star forwards could slow Edgecombe’s development, and Joel Embiid’s playoff health remains an open issue.
Still, if you’re Philadelphia, you take the swing. A championship may be a stretch, but this is a talented enough group to get there.
Even a Finals run would be enough for a fan base that would gladly live with disappointment if it meant getting that far. Once you reach that stage, the Larry O’Brien Trophy is in play.
And beyond the projections, James gives the Sixers something they needed: a steadying presence. He and Brown bring the kind of work ethic and winning habits that can shape a team.
That matters for Embiid, who showed in the first round against the Celtics that he can still be a force when healthy. It also matters for Maxey and Edgecombe, the young guards in Philadelphia who should feel the impact of having those veterans around them.
