Zach LaVine isn’t headed to Boston, at least not right now.
The latest word is that the Kings are keeping him in Northern California for the time being, which takes one possible headache off the Celtics’ plate. It also keeps LaVine away from South Beach, where he would have fit neatly into a Miami roster that already looks like a tougher Celtics problem than it did before.
LaVine has always been one of the league’s stranger stars to evaluate. He’s expensive, sure, but he’s also still a real scorer who has never exactly been handed the chance to live inside a true contender’s structure.
That’s why a team like Boston could have had some interest. On the right roster, he still looks like the kind of player who can matter in a big way.
Miami is the obvious example. The Heat may have gotten better fortunes by landing Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they’ve also lost their best shot-making guards in Tyler Herro and Norman Powell.
Whether LaVine is better than either one can go on forever. What’s not really debatable is that he would be a strong replacement.
For now, though, Sacramento is holding onto him. That may not last.
The Kings are starting to look like a team headed toward a rebuild, even if they’re not exactly sitting at the end of some golden run. Their current direction isn’t working, and sooner or later they’ll have to deal with that reality.
If they decide to move LaVine, the contract is the obvious obstacle. It’s too large for most teams to absorb at face value, which means Sacramento would probably need to attach bad money to get something done. The Kings don’t have a reputation as a franchise that routinely blows up the cap, so there’s a chance they simply choose not to force it.
If that happens and they want LaVine out while leaning into a tank, a buyout could come into play.
Either way, the fit in Miami keeps hanging over this situation. On paper, LaVine looks like exactly the kind of player the Heat need, and exactly the kind of player he could thrive beside.
Caleb Martin once flashed like a star for Miami in the playoffs, even if only briefly. LaVine, in theory, could do that for longer and with a bigger overall impact.
So Boston can relax for now. But this one still feels like it’s waiting to happen.
