Celtics Face A Costly Payton Pritchard Decision Fast

Payton Pritchard faces a crucial decision with the Celtics as the extension deadline looms, with significant financial implications if he chooses to wait until next offseason.

Payton Pritchard and the Celtics are staring at a hard deadline, and the sides still haven’t found common ground on a new deal.

Pritchard became eligible on Oct. 1 for a three-year, $69 million extension, but nearly two weeks later, that agreement hasn’t materialized. The clock keeps shrinking, and the date that matters most is Oct.

  1. That’s the last day Pritchard can sign an extension with Boston before the 2026-27 NBA regular season opens on Oct.

If that deadline passes without a deal, the next chance to revisit negotiations won’t come until July 2027.

For now, the biggest number on the table is the one Pritchard can lock in this summer: three years and $69 million. Hold off until next offseason, and the price tag could jump to a four-year package worth roughly $100 million.

Pritchard has plenty going for him in those talks. He won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 2024-25, then followed it up with career-best production in 2025-26, posting 17.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds. He also started 50 of 79 games last season.

And if he keeps climbing this season, his leverage only improves.

Pritchard is already under contract through 2027-28 after signing a four-year, $30 million extension with the Celtics in 2023. His salary for 2026-27 is $7.8 million, and it rises to $8.3 million in 2027-28.

So the decision in front of Boston is clear: act before Oct. 19, or let the market reset later.

Joe Mazzulla May Be Building A More Reliable Celtics Offense

The Celtics opened the preseason with wins over Cleveland and Philadelphia, and the early signs have centered less on shot-making than on the way Joe Mazzulla wants this group to manufacture extra possessions. Even when the offense was uneven, Boston found ways to stay in control by leaning into activity on the glass and pressure that turned into easier chances the other way.

For a team that already knows how to score when its rhythm is right, the more interesting part is whether those habits can make the offense steadier when it is not. Mazzulla has emphasized offensive rebounding and forcing turnovers as part of the formula, and that approach could end up mattering as much as shot selection once the games start counting for real. Paul George Just Sent Celtics Fans A Clear Jayson Tatum Message

Paul George is already framing his Celtics partnership with Jayson Tatum in pretty clear terms as Boston gets a first look at the pairing under Joe Mazzulla. After their encouraging preseason debut together, Georges message was less about sorting out pecking order and more about fit, with the veteran wing signaling he understands where the offense is headed and what kind of burden Tatum is expected to carry moving forward.

Georges view of the arrangement also gives Celtics fans a glimpse of how Boston hopes to balance its top-end talent. Rather than trying to crowd Tatum out of the spotlight, George is embracing a supporting role that is built around easing pressure, helping defensively and doing the little things that keep possessions alive. The bigger question now is how naturally that plan translates once the games start to matter and the Celtics push deeper into next season. [Read more 🡒]

Jayson Tatum Now Faces The Celtics Pressure Fans Have Debated For Years

Jayson Tatums return from an Achilles injury already put the spotlight back on him, but the Celtics direction has made that spotlight even brighter. With the team moving on from the longtime two-star arrangement that defined its recent run, Boston is now built to lean far more heavily on Tatum as the central figure of the franchise.

For years, fans debated whether the Celtics needed a different kind of hierarchy to get over the top, and now that discussion has become the reality on the floor. The pressure is no longer about sharing the load as much as it is about how far Tatum can carry the roster in this next phase, with the championship outlook tied closely to how that adjustment plays out.
