Celtics Face A Costly Decision On Trey Murphy III

The Boston Celtics face a steep price if they wish to secure Trey Murphy III, as the New Orleans Pelicans demand multiple first-round picks for the rising star.

The Celtics have a clearer picture now of what a Trey Murphy III trade would demand, and it sounds expensive.

Per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the Pelicans have set a steep price on the 26-year-old forward in recent trade conversations. New Orleans would need multiple first-round picks to "pique their interest" in moving Murphy, a sign they are not planning to let him go cheaply.

That asking price fits the profile of a player the Pelicans value highly. Murphy, the No. 17 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, put together a strong season last year, averaging 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.5 steals while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from 3-point range on 8.6 attempts per game.

His contract also gives New Orleans no reason to rush. Murphy is in the second year of a four-year, $112 million deal and is set to make $27 million this season, $29 million in 2027-28 and $31 million in 2028-29.

For Boston, there are no current reports saying it is actively chasing Murphy right now. Still, the Celtics have had their eye on him before.

Following the Celtics’ trade of Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported that Boston was among the teams with interest. As Scotto put it in July: "The Celtics have monitored Murphy’s trade market, and following the Brown trade for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks, they have gained extra draft capital that New Orleans has desired in any trade talks,"

Scotto also noted that the Pelicans had come down from an asking price equivalent to four first-round picks to three.

Some fans believed Boston was getting close to a deal in September after a social media account claimed the Celtics were working on a trade involving George and multiple draft picks. That buzz didn’t hold up, though, and the account in question has a track record of posting fake NBA rumors.

Even so, Murphy still fits the kind of player Boston could circle back to before the trade deadline. He brings many of the same traits as Paul George - a 6-foot-8 forward who can shoot the 3 and defend - but he is 10 years younger and under contract through 2028-29.

So if the Celtics decide to make another call, they already know the price tag is heavy.

Joe Mazzulla Just Drew A Line Around Bostons Biggest Priority

Joe Mazzulla used a recent radio appearance to make the Celtics priorities pretty clear: the conversation in Boston is about the group in front of them, not the baggage from the past. Asked about former player Jaylen Brown, Mazzulla acknowledged what Brown meant to the franchise, but he kept steering the focus back to the current roster, the trust being built inside the room and the identity Boston is trying to shape early in the season.

It is a familiar kind of boundary-setting from a coach who knows how quickly outside storylines can pull attention away from the work at hand. Boston has opened 3-1 and is trying to turn that start into something more durable, which makes Mazzullas message feel less like a deflection than a reminder that the Celtics would rather define themselves by what they are building now than by what they have already moved past. Celtics Need More From Mitchell Robinson Than Theyre Getting Right Now

Mitchell Robinsons first season in Boston has not gotten off to the kind of start the Celtics envisioned, and the early returns have shown why the adjustment period matters. The big man is still working his way into the system and back toward full conditioning, while the team has not yet seen the kind of two-way impact it expects from him.

Inside the organization, there is still belief that the production will come as Robinson gets more comfortable and his legs come back. Robinson has been open about his underwhelming start and is motivated to turn it around, which leaves the Celtics in a familiar holding pattern for now: waiting on a player they believe can help, even if the immediate results have not matched the long-term optimism. Mike Conley Is Already Giving Celtics Fans Another Reason To Smile

Mike Conley is still in the early days of settling in with the Celtics, but he has already started to look like the kind of addition Boston fans can embrace beyond the box score. He has spoken positively about adjusting to the city and finding his place with the team, and on a day when the organization was already making headlines off the floor, the veteran guard was out in the community helping keep the mood light and connected.

Conley joined Ron Harper Jr. and Dillon Mitchell for a Halloween surprise party at the Watertown Boys & Girls Club, where the players mixed with kids through games and autograph signings. It was the sort of appearance that reinforces how much the Celtics lean into their local footprint, especially on a day when the franchise was also tied to a major charitable announcement from its ownership group and foundation in support of pediatric health initiatives.
