Celtics End Preseason With One Encouraging Sign Fans Will Love

Against the odds, the Celtics' impressive depth shines as they defeat the 76ers to wrap up an unbeaten preseason.

The Celtics closed the preseason with a win that said a lot about the shape of their roster, even with most of their top names sitting out Friday night in Philadelphia.

Boston took on the 76ers for the second time this preseason and, despite a major depth gap, came away with a 125-120 overtime victory. The Celtics finished exhibition play at 4-0 and now turn to their regular season opener in Detroit on Tuesday afternoon against the Pistons.

The setup made the result stand out. Boston held out nearly all of its key players, while Philadelphia rolled out most of the regulars expected to be in the starting lineup this season and gave them 24-plus minutes. The Celtics were also led from the sideline by Sam Cassell, with head coach Joe Mazzulla taking the night off.

Among the Celtics’ inactive names were Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, Mitchell Robinson, Sam Hauser, Paul George, Neemias Queta, Mike Conley and Devin Carter. The 76ers were without VJ Edgecombe, Dominick Barlow, Anfernee Simons, Ariel Hukporti, Adem Bona and Tacko Fall.

Boston’s biggest bright spot was Hugo Gonzalez, who finished with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists in a little under 20 minutes. Ron Harper Jr. added 16 points, and rookie Chris Cenac Jr. chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds in 19 and a half minutes.

Philadelphia got a strong night from Joel Embiid, who scored a game-high 27 points in 29 minutes. Jaylen Brown, facing his former team for the first time, posted 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists, one steal and two blocks.

The starters for Philly didn’t see much of the closing stretch, and the game turned into a battle between the back ends of both rotations before Boston edged it out in overtime.

Celtics Enter Opening Night With One Massive Roster Question

The Celtics are heading into the 2026-27 season with plenty of reasons to believe they can stay in the contender mix, even after a major shakeup to the roster. Boston spent the offseason trying to patch two clear needs, adding Paul George and Mitchell Robinson to give the group more versatility on the wing and more size around the basket after a season that left the front office looking for answers.

Defensively, the pieces fit on paper, and the rebounding looks like it should be a step up as well, which gives Boston a chance to win the kind of games that matter in the regular season. The lingering question is how the offense holds together, especially if the three-point shooting takes a hit while the team adjusts to a different look, and that tension could shape how high the Celtics can climb before opening night gives way to the real verdict. Joel Embiid Just Gave Celtics Fans A Preseason Reason To Worry

Joel Embiids preseason meeting with the Celtics produced a moment that caught just about everyone off guard, including Embiid himself. The Philadelphia 76ers center threw down a dunk in the game, a small but notable sign that hes still willing to bring a little more force back into his offense after previously steering clear of those plays to protect his body.

For Boston, it was the kind of early October flash that can linger in the back of your mind. Embiids performance suggested a renewed edge and a more aggressive version of himself heading into the season, which is the sort of development the Celtics would rather not have to think about this early, especially if it carries over once the games start to count. Celtics Exposed A Sixers Problem That Should Get Fans Talking

The Celtics and 76ers wrapped up a pair of preseason meetings with a familiar October caveat attached, since several of the biggest names never suited up. In Philadelphia, Boston leaned on bench players and training-camp hopefuls, yet the group still brought a level of pace and edge that stood out against a Sixers side that featured some regulars in Boston. For a team trying to sort out the bottom of its roster and build habits before the games count, that kind of effort matters.

What lingered from the matchup was less about the final result and more about the contrast in energy. Observers came away noting that some Philadelphia stars looked detached at times, while Bostons lesser-known players played with urgency and competitiveness from start to finish. It is the sort of early-season snapshot that can be easy to dismiss, but it also tends to say something about how much each side is getting out of these tuneups. [Read more 🡒]
