Celtics Could Benefit From A Growing Knicks Problem

A brewing contract dispute with Karl-Anthony Towns might jeopardize the Knicks' title defense and pave the way for the Celtics to seize Eastern Conference dominance.

The Knicks have barely started their title defense, and already there’s a crack running through the middle of the operation.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, New York is dealing with “a growing cloud around the New York Knicks,” and the issue centers on Karl-Anthony Towns’ next contract. The Knicks, Charania reported Monday, are asking Towns to accept a major discount on his next deal, and the two sides are nowhere near agreement. He also said there’s a similar situation developing with Josh Hart, that owner James Dolan is still refusing to go over the second apron, and that the tension could spill into the February trade deadline.

Towns didn’t exactly hide the concern when he spoke to reporters Monday morning: "Simply put - I want to do something to keep the team together and can work with the Knicks and also values me. And none of those things are close to happening."

That’s a stunning place for the defending champions to be this early. Just a few months ago, the Knicks looked like the team built to keep rolling, with Jalen Brunson on a discount contract and the whole thing humming on what felt like pure momentum and chemistry. Now the business side is barging in, and it’s threatening to split up a group that looked incredibly tight not long ago.

The real danger is what comes next. Towns still has this season guaranteed, plus a player option for next season, but if no extension gets any closer, New York may have to think about trading one of its best players before the deadline. That’s the kind of move that can flip a season on its head.

If it gets that far, the East suddenly opens right back up. The Knicks are sitting in a tier of their own right now, but they’ve already lost Mitchell Robinson from the frontcourt, and losing Towns would leave them in serious trouble. Nobody’s saying they’d simply let him walk for nothing, but the longer this drags out, the messier it gets.

For the Celtics, that’s the kind of development you watch very closely. Boston looks as connected as it has in years and seems ready to make a real push back into the race. The Knicks are the clear obstacle in the conference, but if this Towns situation blows up, the road to the top gets a whole lot cleaner for Boston.

Jayson Tatum Sees One Immediate Difference With Celtics Big Man

Mitchell Robinson is already giving the Celtics something they have long valued in the frontcourt, and Jayson Tatum noticed the difference quickly. After signing a three-year contract with Boston, Robinson brings a reputation for defensive disruption, physical rebounding and the kind of interior presence that can change how opponents attack the rim.

Tatum pointed to Robinson's defensive skills, his work on the glass and the broader impact he can have on the group, which fits neatly with what Boston has wanted from its big men. Robinson has built his name as one of the league's better offensive rebounders, and the Celtics will be counting on that edge to show up every night, especially once the games start to tighten and the margin for error gets smaller. Jayson Tatum Already Sounds Comfortable With A New Celtics Frontcourt Fit

Bostons final training camp practice in Charleston, South Carolina, offered a first real glimpse of how Jayson Tatum is beginning to mesh with a new frontcourt partner. With the season inching closer, Tatum spent some time discussing Mitchell Robinson and the way the Celtics can lean into his defensive presence, rebounding and screening to make the half-court offense and the overall lineup structure feel more natural.

For Tatum, the fit appears to be about more than just rim protection. He sounded comfortable with the idea of Robinson helping set the tone on both ends, and that matters for a team trying to sort out its rotations and maximize the forwards and centers around him. The early read is encouraging, even if the real test will come once the Celtics start facing live pressure and have to turn those camp impressions into something repeatable. [Read more 🡒]

Celtics Are Suddenly Linked To A Knicks Move Fans Didn't Expect

The Celtics already made one notable Knicks-related splash this offseason by bringing in center Mitchell Robinson, and now their front office is being tied to another big name from New York. This time it is Karl-Anthony Towns, whose contract situation has quietly become a talking point around the league as Boston looks for ways to keep stacking talent around its core.

A Towns deal would not be simple and it would not come cheap, but the fit is easy to understand for a team that values spacing, size and versatility. The possibility only exists if contract talks in New York go sideways, which remains a long shot given the Knicks recent championship, but the mere mention of Boston in that conversation is enough to make the idea worth watching.
