After the trade deadline, the Celtics found themselves with an unexpected opportunity to get under the tax apron, a move not initially anticipated by team president Brad Stevens. Reflecting on the situation, Stevens mentioned, “After the Vuc trade, we saw that as an opportunity. If there's something that we look at and we say, we got to take advantage of it right now, then we're going to try to take advantage of it.”
To capitalize on this, Boston executed trades involving Chris Boucher, Josh Minott, and Xavier Tillman, which brought them $842,292 below the tax line. This was a significant achievement for the team, allowing them more flexibility moving forward.
Fast forward to February 19, and the Celtics faced a new challenge. With their roster reduced to 12 players after the trade deadline and Amari Williams' two-way contract conversion, they needed to bolster their lineup to meet the NBA's minimum roster size of 14. Teams are allowed to be below this minimum for only 14 days at a time and a maximum of 28 days throughout the season.
The Celtics strategically waited until the last permissible moment, exactly 14 days after the deadline, to sign two players to 10-day contracts. Dalano Banton and Jalen Tonje were brought in, extending the roster until February 28. This gives Boston another 14-day window before needing to make further roster adjustments, pushing them closer to the end of the season on March 14.
