The Boston Celtics are making moves, and they're bringing in Charles Bassey on a 10-day contract. Standing tall at six-foot-10, Bassey has been with the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State's G League team, and has also spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers this season.
In his brief NBA appearances, Bassey put up 3.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in just 12 minutes per game. His preseason stint with the Atlanta Hawks was particularly eye-catching, where he filled the stat sheet against the Miami Heat with seven points, 17 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals.
Bassey's no stranger to Boston, having played for the Celtics during Summer League, where he averaged 15.3 points on a scorching 70.4 percent shooting, along with 11 rebounds and two blocks per game. The Celtics were keen on keeping him for training camp, and now they have another chance to see what he can bring to the table.
Looking ahead, the Celtics will need to plan for when Bassey's 10-day contract ends. They'll have to fill a roster spot, and converting Ron Harper Jr. from a two-way to a standard contract could be in the cards, especially if they want to manage their luxury tax situation wisely.
There's also a possibility of bringing back Bassey or Dalano Banton on another short-term deal, or perhaps exploring other options.
In another roster move, the Celtics signed Max Shulga to a standard two-year deal. Previously on a two-way contract, Shulga is having a standout season with the Maine Celtics, averaging 16.4 points per game and shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc. His contributions include 7.1 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game, making him a valuable addition to Boston's roster while helping them stay under the luxury tax threshold.
With these strategic moves, the Celtics are positioning themselves well as they navigate the tail end of the regular season.
