The Houston Texans are staring down a major challenge heading into their divisional-round showdown with the New England Patriots - and it’s not just the opponent. It’s the growing likelihood that they'll be without their top wide receiver, Nico Collins.
Collins, who left last weekend’s wild-card win over the Steelers with a concussion, hasn’t practiced this week. That’s now two straight DNPs (Did Not Participate) on the official injury report, and with the game fast approaching, the signs aren’t encouraging.
For a player to return from a concussion, they must clear a five-step protocol, and while it’s unclear exactly where Collins is in that process, the final steps involve full participation in practice and clearance from both team and independent medical personnel. He hasn’t hit those marks yet.
To make matters worse, this isn’t just any player we’re talking about. Collins has been a go-to weapon for C.J.
Stroud all season, and his absence would be a big blow against a Patriots defense that’s known for taking away an opponent’s top option. The severity of the concussion was evident - Collins was carted off and ruled out almost immediately against Pittsburgh.
Given that, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Texans play it safe and keep him sidelined.
So what does this mean for the Texans’ offense?
It means it’s time for Christian Kirk to shine again. Kirk was electric in the wild-card round, torching the Steelers for eight catches, 144 yards, and a touchdown. He’s already shown he can carry the load when needed, and Houston will need that kind of performance again if Collins is out.
But it can’t be a one-man show. Rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel will likely see expanded roles, as will Xavier Hutchinson - a veteran who’s quietly made key contributions throughout the season. These aren’t just names on the depth chart; they’ve each had moments where they’ve stepped up and delivered when called upon.
And don’t forget about Dalton Schultz. The veteran tight end is a trusted target in the middle of the field, and with Collins potentially sidelined, expect the Texans to feature Schultz more heavily in the passing game - especially on third downs and in the red zone.
The Texans have weathered adversity all season long, and this week will be no different. If Collins can’t go, it’ll take a full-squad effort to keep the offense humming.
The Patriots will be ready - they always are - but this Texans team has shown it can adapt. Now it’s time to prove it again.
