In a spirited matchup at the PPL Center, the Providence Bruins' comeback fell short against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, ending in a 6-3 defeat. Joey Abate showcased his skills with a goal and an assist, while Alexis Gendron chipped in with two assists. Contributions also came from Matthew Poitras and Riley Duran, each finding the back of the net.
Game Breakdown
The action kicked off with Lane Pederson unleashing a one-timer from the left circle, slipping it past the diving goaltender to put the Phantoms on the board with a 1-0 lead late in the first period.
David Jiricek doubled the lead with a wrist shot from the right circle, finding the upper-right corner for a power play goal early in the second period. Just moments later, Brett Harrison redirected a pass above the crease, pushing the Phantoms ahead 3-0.
Christian Kyrou added to the tally with a breakaway goal, threading a shot under the goaltender’s pads, extending the lead to 4-0 midway through the second.
However, the Bruins began to claw back. Gendron skillfully maneuvered past a defender and connected with Abate, who redirected the puck for a power play goal, cutting the deficit to 4-1 just before the second intermission.
Early in the third, Gendron was at it again, setting up Poitras on a 3-on-1 rush. Poitras fired a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the net, narrowing the gap to 4-2.
The momentum continued as Abate found Jake Schmaltz, who threaded a pass to Duran for a redirection goal, bringing the Bruins within one, 4-3.
Yet, the Phantoms responded with Oskar Eklind's wrist shot from the low slot, restoring a 5-3 lead. Anthony Richard sealed the game with an empty-netter, finalizing the score at 6-3.
